About Katy Gordon

I'm a senior and experienced leader and careers guidance professional seasoned in the rigorous and fluid worlds of education and politics. Over 26 years of managing budgets, people and projects. Recognised and commended for talent in winning over sceptical stakeholders, effective management and innovation. Proven ability to think strategically, negotiate and deliver results. Extremely resilient and persistently collaborative. Having spent 5 wonderful years with The Careers Group at Goldsmiths, University of London, I have recently joined the University of Southampton in a new role as Director of Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise. In joining a Russell Group research-intensive institution, I've opened up a whole new network of contacts and support. With a much larger team, bigger budget and 7 campuses to cover, it is a very different university, but some things are strikingly similar within the world of careers guidance. I have been delighted by the warm welcome and encouragement to drive change by the senior leadership. My primary focus is on embedding employability within the curriculum, expanding work experience opportunities, excellence in service delivery to students, employers and academics and on demonstrating the impact of our service. My over-riding goal is to make a substantial difference to the students and graduates of the University of Southampton, in preparing them to be confident career planners and to succeed in the graduate labour market.Specialties: Particular strengths in strategic thinking, transformational change, project management, fundraising & campaigning. Professionally qualified as a Careers Adviser with 28+ years experience in careers guidance. In August 2021, I joined the Board of AGCAS (our professional body, AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services), as Treasurer and Company Secretary. I chair the Governance & Risk Committee and oversee the accounts and financial position of AGCAS.

I joined The Careers Group, based at Goldsmiths, University of London, in this role at a time of major investment by the institution in careers and employability. I crafted our institutional employability strategy, overseeing a doubling of staff within the team and moving offices twice, all within the first couple of months. As a member of The Careers Group's Senior Management Team, I made good use of the weight of experience and good practice gained from being part of the largest higher education careers professionals body to take Goldsmiths' approach to employability forward and assist the institution to advance up the league tables as we support our students and graduates to succeed in the graduate labour market.During my time at Goldsmiths, I focused on embedding employability within the curriculum, expanding work experience opportunities, excellence in service delivery to students, employers and academics and on demonstrating the impact of our service. I was heavily involved in developing our institutional Enterprise Hub and oversaw the creation of our comprehensive College Wide Student Enterprise Offer.
