One of the most riveting and memorable discussions in my life-long education was led by Dr. Norman White. I very clearly remember the passion he possessed in describing his point of view on the so-called “safety nets” in our society. He urged us students to think critically about that concept, pointing out that nets inherently have holes. Instead, he challenged us to not settle for the status quo and invited us to build “quilts” throughout our lives and our work, no matter where our paths would take us. Quilts are carefully stitched together, making sure that each piece fits carefully and exactly to ensure coverage, resulting in warmth and representing the very best in humanity. If you were to ask me what I do, I would tell you that I make quilts. I work thoughtfully and strategically to bring together diverse partners and stakeholders to work collaboratively and in concert with one another to improve the lives and opportunities for our youth. Each partner and person fill a unique piece of the patchwork. I work unceasingly with the hope that one day no one will slip through any hole or crack in society because there won’t be any place for them to fall –the quilt built by community coalitions and individual activists simply won’t allow for that. Am I an undying optimist? For sure. But I’m not naïve. I’ve seen the difficulties that humanity faces, and the best of humanity rise to the occasion. Together, we can.
