Profile bio

About Katy Schamberger

Sure, I’ve worn a number of hats throughout my career: writer, editor, author, digital marketer, social media manager, content strategist, photographer, designer, videographer and live event staff, just to name a few. At my core? I’m a storyteller. First as an advertorial writer and magazine editor; now as a senior content creator and freelance writer specializing in Kansas City-focused pitches. Stories evoke emotion, build community, motivate us to act, fill us with wonder (or on the flip side, despair), deepen our curiosity and empathy and understanding. I tell stories to drive results. The challenge comes in quickly knowing a client as well as I know myself so that I can decide what stories to tell, how they’re being told, who they’re being told to and what happens next. This story-centric approach to content strategy and marketing — instilled in me by a bachelor’s degree in magazine journalism from Mizzou — has propelled me into different corporate roles and also owner of an LLC; to events and activations around the country (soon to expand internationally); and to work with clients ranging from engineering firms and healthcare organizations to global auto brands and pro sports + entertainment franchises. I’ve written local magazine features that were highlighted on CNN; published a book; planned and managed live event social media campaigns that delivered consecutive years of record results; planned, hosted, filmed, edited and marketed a local business-focused podcast; and have seen product packaging copy I wrote on the shelves of my favorite national retailer. And friends? We’re just getting started. The spotlight is shining more brightly than ever before on Kansas City, and I’m recommitted to pitching some of the most fascinating, under-the-radar stories to regional and national magazines. In my full-time role with Augeo, I have an incredible opportunity to build a content team from scratch as we reexamine the role that strategically created content plays in the experiential marketing lifecycle and tell clients a powerful story of their own: one of results, of what happened next. I’m always interested in learning about other people, their work, what drives them and how I can help. And if you find yourself in Kansas City, please message me for recommendations. I want to make sure your KC story is one that you reach for again. Specialties: Writing, editing, copywriting, marketing, branding/positioning, freelance writing, photography, SEO, social media management, content strategy, experiential marketing, event marketing

Listed skills include Writing, Copywriting, Blogging, Editorial Project Management, and 41 others.

Senior Content Creator

Current

Kansas City, Missouri, United States

Augeo is a multifaceted powerhouse with divisions including experiential, workplace engagement, digital asset experiences and more. At our core, all of these divisions unite under the Augeo umbrella to activate and engage audiences: employees, customers, prospects, attendees — anyone existing within our clients' ecosystems. As the Senior Content Manager on Augeo's MDS Experience team, my strategic marketing and content creation skills are focused on our experiential clients. Content plays such a critical role in establishing and reinforcing an attendee experience. Our growing content team works closely with Augeo's design, digital and client services teams to understand the experience, the audience, and how we're going to connect with them. Then, we create content — from singular collateral pieces to asset-supported marketing strategies — that move attendees through their journey in ways that are intentional and meaningful. We also work with clients on-site during an experience to discover and tell stories, creating a rich library of interactive content that powers marketing and business strategies in the weeks and months to come. What better way to cultivate loyalty, spark engagement, pique excitement and build anticipation than by telling a story? It's discovering which stories to tell — and how to tell them — that sets our team apart and helps us exceed client expectations.

Freelance Writer, Social Media Manager And Digital Marketer

Current
Self Employed

Kansas City, Missouri Area

Freelance work has been a constant throughout my career, but it's incredible to see how the work itself has changed and expanded in scope — a testament to the meteoric rise in technology and its indelible imprint on marketing & communications. I began freelance writing in September 2007 after departing my full-time position as a real estate writer at the Kansas City Star. From there, I started blogging, mostly in the DIY/home improvement realm (thank you for taking a chance on me, Timothy!) Once I became more comfortable with freelance work, additional opportunities arrived, from working remotely as a magazine staff editor for a publication in another city to expanding my magazine bylines in publications like KC Magazine, KC Business, Shawnee magazine, KANSAS! magazine, Urban Living, Delta's Sky magazine and IN Kansas City. In the early 2010s, changes to the magazine and media landscape became impossible to ignore. That's when I began to diversify my storytelling, research and interview experience into marketing. And freelance provided a continued conduit for creativity, a chance to continue covering the topics I loved (anything related to Kansas City). A few years later — and with experience at a small agency and on a corporate marketing team — the freelance, self-employed business model became my full-time structure. I balanced magazine and digital bylines with marketing clients who needed help with strategic messaging, content creation and social media management. To date, I've worked in a wide variety of industries, including commercial development, healthcare, technology, software, insurance, engineering, entertainment, retail product marketing, non-profits, urban development + revitalization, sports entertainment and travel & tourism. If I don't immediately have knowledge around a particular subject matter, I love nothing more to immerse myself in research so that I can concisely yet authoritatively tell a story. Just call me the content chameleon.

Podcast Host, Producer + Marketer

Kansas City, Missouri, United States

I collaborated with a team from the Downtown Council, the KC Streetcar (and the Streetcar Board of Directors) and the Downtown Neighborhood Association to create, host and market Downtown Dish, a weekly podcast geared toward helping downtown KC bars and restaurants rebound post-lockdown. Although the widespread COVID-19 lockdown lifted soon after the Downtown Dish launched, many businesses -- especially bars and restaurants -- saw a slow recovery as customers hesitated to return to pre-pandemic socializing. So much of the local service community creatively embraced new opportunities, including full meal + cocktail carryout service, curbside pick-up and outdoor dining in newly constructed sidewalk & parking lot cafes, among other ideas. As host and producer of the Downtown Dish, I scheduled regular planning meetings with the team to discuss story ideas and upcoming episode content. Each weekly episode typically featured three guests -- restaurant managers, owners, bartenders, servers and downtown KC stakeholders -- to discuss how their businesses were adapting to the pandemic and how customers could safely support them. Show topics included closer looks at new pop-up dining concepts and ghost kitchens; how to host a fully local backyard tailgate; themed round-ups, including seasonal flavors, plant-based dining & bottled beverages; where KC's food insiders eat; and more. Video episodes available here: https://www.youtube.com/@DowntownDishLater, the podcast morphed into audio-only, available here: https://podcasts.adorilabs.com/downtown-dish/?cid=Rzfgw0HPRBhhvZkr

Chief Content Officer + Lion Tamer

V3 Integrated Marketing Solutions

Kansas City, Mo

Under the direction of Shelly Kramer, CEO + Head Geek, I cracked the whip of content creation - or, more accurately, banged the keys on my laptop keyboard. I planned, developed and created a variety of compelling content for clients, ranging from blog posts and e-newsletters to feature stories and press releases. I consider myself a jack of all trades when it comes to the written word, meaning I can produce the content you need to convey your brand or company's message. Because I'm constantly in creation mode, I'm always on the lookout for ideas, which means I'm a voracious reader. Current events, technological innovations and newly published studies all provide prime fodder for the kind of informative, relevant content that not only boosts readership and engagement -- it helps clients emerge as thought leaders within their industries, a vital reputation builder that boosts business and brand recognition. I also acted as a project manager and client liaison, presenting myself as a knowledgeable, responsive point of contact that can get things done. My client philosophy centers on building relationships, meaning I build a rapport with clients that fosters an environment of productivity and an open channel of feedback. Plus, it makes work fun -- a novel concept, right?

Assistant Editor

Kansas City, Mo

A chance sighting on Ed2010.com led me to Timothy Dahl, founder of Charles & Hudson, a DIY and home improvement blog. After contributing posts on a number of DIY-related topics from 2007 to 2010, Timothy promoted me to assistant editor in July 2010. Who doesn't love a promotion (and a fancy new title to go with it?)As part of my expanded role with C&H, I write and post blogs on a regular basis -- up to 10/week, depending on what our contributors post. I oversee the contributing bloggers and provide editorial calendar and general site updates.I also represent C&H at media events, requiring me to put my best networking face forward. I maintain relationships with industry and PR contacts to create relevant posts on the latest DIY products and techniques, with a special emphasis on anything that falls into the C&H niche sites: Kitchens, Paint, Tools, Green Building and Home Security, as well as the main site. Not only can I tell you how to do lots of fun things around the house, but I can write a great blog post about them, too, with a bit of SEO and Google keywords research thrown in to help C&H rise to the top of the shelter blog pack. Oh, and I post Facebook and Twitter updates throughout the week, which turn into a veritable flurry of social media content when I'm at events.

Author, Moon Kansas City

Kansas City, Missouri, United States

My first book, Moon Kansas City, published March 30, 2010, and is a comprehensive travel guide to the Kansas City metro area published by Avalon Travel (now Moon Travel Guides). Written and photographed in a mere 5 months, Moon Kansas City examines the best dining, lodging, entertainment and shopping for Kansas City visitors, regardless of whether they've been to the city once or 10 times. Moon Kansas City has been praised for its array of locally owned, off-the-beaten-path venues that give visitors an eclectic alternative to some of the city's more well-known attractions. (But don't worry -- KC's top tourist sites are in there, too!)Part of my scope also included creating and plotting the maps used throughout the travel guide, a process that proved challenging yet rewarding. I also conducted extensive research to inform the recommendations and background throughout the book, including research trips to Lawrence, Kan., and Omaha, Neb., and many days spent learning local history in the Kansas City Public Library's astounding Missouri Valley research room.

May 2009 - Mar 2010

Kansas Media One Magazine Division, Editorial Director

As editorial director, I was responsible for two magazines, one that targeted Wyandotte County and one distributed throughout Leavenworth County, both in the greater Kansas City metro area.Originally known as Gatehouse, the magazines were designed to be franchised to other cities. After that original business plan fell through, I helped oversee the rebranding of each magazine into a hyperlocal publication, complete with new names, new mastheads and a refined editorial calendar. As editor of The Dot (distributed throughout Wyandotte County) and LV Mag (distributed throughout Leavenworth County), I wrote all of the copy in each issue -- about 14-16 department and feature stories per month. I scheduled interviews and photo shoots, and often took my own pictures to accompany stories and appear on the magazine cover. I also worked with the magazine's director to form marketing and promotional partnerships throughout the area, including a trade with 94.9 KCMO-FM that allowed us to promote the magazines in spite of a minimal marketing budget.I covered a number of topics for each magazine, including local history, business development, entrepreneurs, non-profits and community events.During my tenure at KMO, my career highlight came in August 2009 after I published the first in a three-part feature series on the remains of what was considered to be an underground city in Leavenworth, Kan. The story attracted the attention of KCTV-5, and reporter Surae Chinn came to Leavenworth for a tour and to film a story. That story was subsequently picked up on CNN.com, and appeared on the site's "Breaking News" rail. The story inspired a community movement to repair and renovate the underground remains in the goal of opening them as a tourist attraction, and also inspired calls and letters from around the country, including interest from the producers of Inside Edition.

Sep 2007 - Jan 2010

Real Estate/Urban Living Writer

To this day, I remain grateful that I began my career at the Kansas City Star. After graduating from Mizzou in August 2004, I was hired at the Star in February 2005 as a real estate writer. I worked for the Star's special sections and promotions department, a division of advertising, to write real estate advertorials for the Star's five weekly real estate sections.Client relationships and management were an integral part of this position, as I worked with clients to outline the message they wanted to convey in each story and had copy approved prior to publication, given its advertorial nature. After several months at the Star, I was given the opportunity to oversee and develop a new monthly real estate section, Urban Living, dedicated to all things downtown Kansas City. Although the section was advertorial in nature, I had the ability to publish several editorial stories in each issue, which gave me an opportunity to expand my writing beyond real estate advertorial. I worked with the photography department to coordinate the necessary artistic elements, and acted as art director during our two fall fashion issues, both of which were amazing experiences that allowed me to channel my inner Anna Wintour.I also participated in the Star's marketing and rebranding campaign that coincided with the completion of the new printing press, and wrote radio commercials that communicated the Star's message to the community. Upon leaving my full-time position at the Star, I was given the opportunity to continue writing real estate advertorials as a freelance writer, a position that I continue to hold today, and one that provided the first building block in my freelance career.
