About Derek Kauneckis

I enjoy working in collaborative teams on problem solving around complex and contentious issues. My expertise on behavioral sciences and how people interact with data in complicated decision and policy-making structures helps design novel data systems that can improve community resilience. I have experience conducting integrative system analysis, managing innovation and research development, and deploying a variety of sustainability assessment approaches. I bring over two decades of experience with policy analysis, community engagements on climate adaptation and resilience planning, training in advanced statistical analysis, qualitative and quantitative methods, and using data sciences and technology to tackle societal challenges.I hold a Ph.D. in Public Policy from Indiana University at Bloomington and a M.S. from the University of California at Davis and expertise in sustainability assessment, water rights, ecosystem service valuation, circular economy, resilience planning, and climtech. During my time as university faculty, I earned numerous teaching and mentoring awards, produced over thirty publications, gave more than a hundred guest talks and presentations, and over a dozen presentations to TV, print, radio, and online media. Through the development of interdisciplinary teams, and public and private sector partners, I personally raised over $3 million in research funding and participated in obtaining and managing another $21 million. I have organized over thirty-four professional and academic conference sessions on topics diverse as community-focused smart tech, waste system analysis, networked governance, climate adaptation, and resilient rivers. I have taught courses and professional training on resilience planning, climate policy, public policy analysis, environmental sustainability assessment, budgets and public finance, renewable energy policy, environmental modeling, environmental law, and science, technology and innovation policy. My research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, among others. I am highly skilled at synthesizing complex policy and regulatory issues, building diverse interdisciplinary teams that bridge sectors, and preparing proposals, presentations and written reports, and committed to collaborative partnerships that represent societal diversity while drawing on heterogeneous knowledge systems and emerging technologies.
