I am currently studying Graphic Design at Seneca College. Before studying Graphic Design at Seneca I was working in the non-profit sector as an executive director of a peer-run harm reduction and overdose prevention organization called New Leaf Outreach in Nanaimo (previously, SOLID Nanaimo). In addition to running a non-profit organization was also a legal advocate working on residential tenancy disputes and appeals and tribunals with the Ministry of Social Development & Poverty Reduction and a disability advocate assisting with Persons with Disability Applications and Canada Pension Plan - Disability applications. I have experience as a harm reduction worker, working at a sanctioned overdose prevention site in Nanaimo with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and, as a Person with Lived Experience, in my former role as president of the BC Yukon Association of Drug War Survivor (BCYADWS). My goals in pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design at Seneca are varied. I hope to acquire experience after I graduate from my program in working with a graphic design studio or as a junior graphic designer, part of an in-house graphic design team. I would like to be able to apply the skills that I am learning in my program at Seneca College upon graduating. I am learning to use the following programs and have become fairly adept in my understanding of and experience in:-Adobe Photoshop-Adobe Illustrator-Adobe InDesign -WordPress-Visual Studio Code In addition to learning to become adept in using the above mentioned software I continue to use software that I am already well-versed in:-Microsoft Word-Microsoft Excel-Microsoft Powerpoint-PagesIn addition to my background in the non-profit sector environment I have experience working as a screen printer and have a professional background in screen printing as well. In pursuing my Graphic Design program I hope to apply what I learn to the skills that I already have as a screen printer. Future aspirations, once I have gained more relevant work experience upon graduation from Seneca College, are to apply my graphic design skills to my passion, enthusiasm and activism for social and environmental justice causes and initiatives. I hope to use my skills in such a way that I can bolster a broad base of public support for the work of non-profit organizations and activist groups. I see my role as a graphic designer as one wherein I can contribute to positive social change by creating powerful and moving visual campaign materials.
