About Katherine Devinna

Katherine joined College Track in December 2020 and supports the college dreams of first-generation college students from low-income communities as the College Track San Francisco Site Director. As an educator for more than twenty years, "Be a good person; make good decisions," has become the mantra of Katherine DeVinna. She would speak these words to her students during dismissal, inspiring a generation of students both in and outside the classroom. A passionate educator, Katherine has positively impacted students, teachers, educational leaders, and organizations. While she was a Modern World History teacher in Long Beach, California, Katherine turned a troubled soccer program into a successful year-round program, led student trips to Europe, and wrote small School to Career grants. In 2006, Katherine served John Muir Charter Schools as a substitute teacher, before becoming a Site Director. Katherine was quickly promoted to administrative roles on the District level as the Director of Instruction and Deputy Director, eventually becoming the Chief Operations Officer. She was responsible for transforming the charter school network into award-winning schools, winning the Gary Hart Charter School of The Year in 2015. Two years later, Katherine became the High School Principal at the Oakland Military Institute (OMI) and the Director of Instruction. Working directly with former Governor Jerry Brown, she redesigned the middle school math program to improve SBAC scores, penned OMI's Charter School Data Report, and led the LCAP process. Katherine's most significant accomplishment at OMI was the analysis and rewriting of the School’s charter. She presented and successfully defended the charter to Oakland Unified School District’s school board, ensuring the school could continue to operate in the future. Katherine enjoys tacos, Burningman, traveling, and dismantling institutional white supremacy.
