Knik Energy was created by renewable energy entrepreneurs Mike Craft, CEO of Alaska Environmental Power and Keith Comstock, President of Juneau Hydropower. Knik intends to explore renewable opportunities around the state of Alaska but with an initial focus on meeting the needs of the greater Mat-Su valley and the Cook Inlet.

As a consultant to both Government and industry, Mr. Comstock has provided advice, supported and lead strategic initiatives to some of the largest Tech firms in the nation. During his time at the State of Alaska, Mr. Comstock did not accept new engagements.

Mr. Comstock served as a Senior member of Governor Mike Dunleavy’s Alaska Development Team which was housed under the leadership of Alaska Commerce Commissioner Julie Anderson. Additionally, he was appointed as the Director of International Trade and Development for the State of Alaska.The Alaska Development team was created to take a fresh look at Alaskan economic development needs. Sectors of responsibility have included Agriculture, Aerospace, Broadband and Telecommunications, Information Technology, Tourism, Manufacturing, and Public Private Partnerships. Since late March of 2020 significant energies have been targeted at economic relief for distressed Alaskan businesses as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Keith was tasked as the lead interface for multiple Denali Commission/State of Alaska initiatives.

In 2009, Mr. Comstock cofounded Juneau Hydropower, Inc., and authorized the General Manager to file for a Preliminary permit to study the development of a new Hydropower facility. As an Independent Power Producer, JHI (www.juneauhydropower.com) will deliver competitively priced clean and natural hydroelectric power as a wholesale and industrial provider. The Sweetheart Lake Project is located in Southeast Alaska within the City and Borough of Juneau, approximately 30 miles south of Juneau, Alaska, on Gilbert Bay and will utilize the waters of the Sweetheart Lake basin which drains into Sweetheart Creek and eventually drains into the eastern shore of Gilbert Bay. Gilbert Bay is located within the Port Snettisham area. When complete, the facility will have a total installed capacity of 19.8 MW (Megawatts) with an average annual generation of 116,000 MWh (Megawatt-hours). JHI was required to create and file a full Environmental Impact Statement which has been accepted and approved. In late 2016 Juneau Hydropower received a full FERC license and Federal approval to allow the construction of the Sweetheart Lake project. Since then, significant geotechnical investigations have been undertaken and completed as well as the development and approval of 24 construction, environmental, and engineering plans which were necessary before construction could proceed. JHI has notifed FERC that all pre-construction tasks have been completed and received FERC permission to begin construction. Mr. Comstock remains a significant shareholder in JHI.

Mr. Comstock was selected as a Senior Fellow to promote best practices in Information Technology for the Government Sector. The Center for Digital Government is based in Folsom, California and is part of eRepublic (www.eRepublic.com). Some of the notable eRepublic publications are Governing Magazine, Government Technology, and Public CIO. As a Senior Fellow with the Center, Mr. Comstock has had the pleasure of being a speaker, writer, presenter at numerous conferences and lectures. He has provided advice to multiple state and local administrations and has served on several Gubernatorial Transition Teams for technology issues.

Mr. Comstock served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) leading the Governor’s Office of Technology for the State of West Virginia. As CIO/CTO, Mr. Comstock was instrumental in guiding the state through several major IT initiatives and procurements. As a member of the Governor’s Cabinet, he performed a dual role as technology advisor to the governor and was responsible for all State data processing, software, and telecommunications.
