Signal Processing R&D; Video, Image and Metadata ProcessingLead Imaging Scientist (2012-Present)Metadata: Developed suite of software tools for ingestion and analysis of video and metadata. Working closely with other functional teams to integrate video stream metadata ingestion, decoding, translating, and analysis software routines into an archive database framework. Results: Supporting current customers and growing future business.Video: Developing video quality metrics and automated tools for measurement of “big data” video collections; reporting results to the customer. Exploring novel methods of quantifying motion in a video. Results: Expansion of the company's competencies in the video space.Remote Sensing: Performed image processing techniques on multispectral imagery and successfully demonstrated results within system specifications. Implemented and demonstrated several PAN sharpening techniques for technology briefings to the customer. Results: Harris (Exelis) received a maximum award for the team exceeding project goals.

Camera: In 2008, recruited to work in the Digital Camera Advanced Development Group with responsibility for tuning image processing algorithms (optimizing image quality) of devices that capture images, video and audio. Worked on the first successful mobile imaging product, a Kodak/Motorola cellular phone with a great camera—a game-changing product.Video: Appointed to assist in developing objective metrics that measure various quality attributes (such as noise, color fidelity, distortion, sharpness, dynamic range, etc.) and correlate the metrics against subjective rankings—an effort that resulted in setting specifications for performance and improved quality-of-video-capture-enabled products.Audio: Performance measurement. Developed audio performance measurement capability for portable devices. Co-directed an effort to build a sound laboratory, anechoic chamber, and a suite of tests and specifications for characterizing and measuring a multitude of sound performance metrics. The results: Dramatically improved sound quality of devices.

Improved digital correction algorithm for novel lens design. Produced characterization routines to measure geometric distortions, chromatic aberrations, and noise and falloff of real and simulated lens designs. Further developed novel methods of correction using data from characterization.Investigated ways to improve audio capture in portable devices. Experimented with various microphones and arrangements and evaluated several perceptual encoding technologies—working with emerging science that extracts information from audio signals. The results: Three U.S. patent applications.Led a project to investigate image enhancement solutions for mobile imaging application. Integrated new techniques into existing solutions. Defined a well-received processing path. Optimized image processing algorithms for mobile image capture devices. Characterized aspects of performance for several image capture modules as part of an integrated mobile imaging platform. The results: Improved efficiencies and quality of output.Devised an algorithm for producing range maps from stereo image pairs for use in digital cameras. Prototyped the algorithm in MATLAB®; oversaw research code for testing and further development. Extended application of algorithm to a novel method of auto focus. The results: Efforts that contributed to the granting of two U.S. patents in 2010 for improved methods of image capture.Produced a prototype auto-focus algorithm for an integrated camera sensor module. Modeled two schemes in simulation software and proved the concept. Directed integration into prototype. The results: A working prototype ready for production two weeks ahead of schedule—on plan and on budget.Developed image processing algorithms to reduce artifacts. Characte¬rized and modeled imaging systems from input to output. Optimized correc-tive algo¬rithms and performed robustness testing. The results: One U.S. patent for improved quality.
