Most of these networks exist to conduct laboratory assessments of Command and Control systems necessary to support the war-fighter. Computer Network Defense (CND) is often aligned with Information Assurance- a group we work closely with for providing Retina and Nessus vulnerability scans as part of a DIACAP certification and accreditation package, as mandated by FISMA (Federal Information Systems Management Act). Certifying these systems helps manage the lifecycle of such in a controlled environment with a carefully maintained risk assessment level. The skill base of CND is multi-faceted and, in noteworthy enclaves such as JS-HR, involves an amalgam of high technical computer\ networking skills with an overriding need for secure operations based on risk avoidance and acceptance. As the Team Lead for the JSIC Computer Network Defense engineering cell, my duties include interacting with Project Engineers to support the security assessment of external hardware or software prior to adding those components as nodes in a JSIC exercise. This often include systems iinvolved with producing common operational picture (COP) data, command and control (C2) systems or other complex interactive suites of computers. During the Coalition Warfighter Interoperability Demonstration (CWID09), my duties included interacting with the Information Assurance lead from the National Security Agency to help structure scanning and IA security operations. I served as a subject matter expert to the NSA lead in order to provide lessons learned as well as to craft a better more efficient CWID10 from an IA perspective. I often interface between the Engineering and the Technical Directorates so as to facilitate an on-going effort to shape policy, provide services, research complex matters and compile a sound risk analysis/ risk assessment as part of a authorization to connect (ATO) package submitted to the designated approval authority (DAA). New challenges, such as couteracting hacking attempts, managing DISA's vulnerability management system for the Cell, incident handling, computer forensics and the DIACAP process lay ahead as goals to be mastered by my excellent professional team at JSIC.
