Sandstorm Gold finances gold mining projects through royalty purchases and an arrangement called gold streaming. A gold stream involves Sandstorm making an upfront payment to a mining partner that is in need of capital to build their mine, refinance their obligations, complete an acquisition or for various other reasons. In exchange for that upfront payment, Sandstorm receives a contract which stipulates the purchase of a certain percentage of the gold produced from the mine, for the life of the mine, at a fixed per unit cost. I am part of a Technical Team that provides support to our finance team. The Technical Team is responsible to identify and review proposed financing transactions. Our job is to evaluate the resources/reserves, geology, mining, metallurgy/recovery, processing, infrastructure, management and economics of proposed financing transactions.
Principal Mining Specialist
Identified and evaluated mining investment opportunities in Developing Countries around the world. Provided technical support to financial team (12 investment officers) and provided advice and technical support to portfolio managers on existing equity and debt investments. Specialized in resource evaluation, valuation, and corporate analysis in Africa, Latin America, Central and Eastern Asia.
Owner/President- U.S. Operating Company
KAL Exploration Inc. was my U.S. operating company that provided management contracts with clients. The company was made inactive in November 2012. I provided services to three clients, with variable levels of employees as needed. Programs included operating as the CEO/President of Estrella Gold Corporation, Mining Specialist for the IFC/World Bank, and Technical Advisor/Director for Gallant Minerals, a private corporation with mining properties in Peru and Mongolia.
President And Ceo
Estrella was a successful exploration company focused entirely in Peru. As President I reorganized the business strategy, moving from direct exploration to the prospect generator model, resulting in the establishment of strategic alliances and joint ventures with Cliffs Natural Resources Corporation, Mines Management Ltd. and Lara Minerals focussed in Peru. We reorganized the Board of Directors to better align with the company's strategy, including moving the company HQ from Toronto to Vancouver. I was responsible for financing and marketing, in addition to all exploration management. I left Estrella to join the World Bank on a full time basis. Estrella has since merged with Tarsis to form a new company named Allianza, with a larger portfolio.
Country Manager - Haiti
After working in Haiti for Newmont previously, I initiated a new gold exploration program in 2006, by acquiring key gold and copper properties with the strong technical support of Dr. Dominique Boisson and financial support of Eurasian Minerals. We hired staff and directed exploration programs that successfully acquired properties and identified several significant new gold occurrences. The properties and the company were subsequently acquired by Newmont Mining in a strategic alliance with Eurasian Minerals, allowing Newmont to earn in to a majority ownership. Eurasian sold their retained interest to Newmont in late 2015 for $4.0M, and they retained a 1% NSR royalty. The projects are now dormant while the Government of Haiti considers a new mining law that will support sustainable mineral development.
Vice President
With HQ in Vancouver, I operated from offices in Golden Colorado where I built up a portfolio of uranium resources and exploration projects through management of three operating companies in three countries (U.S., Canada, Mali). Northern Canadian acquired roll-front type uranium projects in Wyoming, and conducted significant drilling to define NI 43-101 compliant resources. I acquired historic uranium resources located in northern Mali, adjacent to the major resources in neighboring Niger. NCU also explored prospective bedrock hosted uranium mineralization along strike from the Eagle Point deposits in the eastern Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan. NCU pioneered new uranium exploration techniques and advanced technical concepts in all programs. The combination of experience and strategy led to the company being acquired by Bayswater Uranium. I continued with Bayswater as a Senior Vice President, before resigning due to potential conflicts of interest.
President
This unique opportunity allowed me to develop a global exploration company, funded directly by a private investor based in London. As a result, Gallant Minerals created three exploration companies and acquired prospective property portfolios in Mongolia and Peru. In this role I acted as CEO/Managing Director of all subsidiary companies. I established the legal entities, hired staff, and managed and directed exploration programs that acquired a wide range of properties. During operations several early stage discoveries were established, and Joint Ventures were established on several properties with respected partners including Rio Tinto, Newmont Mining Corp, Western Mining Corporation, and several junior companies. The companies and projects were sold in 2004-5, and Gallant retains some royalty interests on developing projects.
Senior Geologist - Regional Manager
I was fortunate to be hired by one of the world's leading gold producers, Newmont Mining Corporation, just as gold emerged as a popular commodity in 1980. The initial program assessed the many historic gold mines scattered through the Southeastern U.S.(home of the first gold rush in America). Newmont sponsored my graduate studies, and I was transferred to head up a regional exploration program, based in Duluth Minnesota. With a staff of 8, we conducted aggressive exploration programs in the Archean rocks of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and U.P Michigan. Our team developed new strategies and techniques that were adopted by the parent Company. I transferred to the Helena Montana office in 1991 to lead a regional generative exploration program extending from the northern tip of Alaska to the Snake River in Idaho, examining Cordilleran precious metal systems. I also spent a year at Newmont's Post and Carlin mines in the Carlin Trend of Nevada; two years exploring the Musgrove gold project in Idaho, and a year defining a 1.3 million ounce gold resources at the True North project in Alaska (later mined by Fort Knox). I was transferred to lead Newmont's Caribbean gold exploration programs based in Hispaniola in 1997, and I left Newmont after the program was closed (due to security issues in Haiti).
