I have a strong technical background with experience in automation, sales and customer service. Like most geeks, I got into automation because I wanted to see what I could make machines do. That is fun, but if isn't focused on the needs of a customer it is pretty pointless beyond automating your home or in my case, automating an animal feed processing system on our ranch. Nice, but it doesn't pay a whole lot of bills.Focusing on the needs of customers, especially their unspoken needs opens the world to automation. For years I built automation systems according to requests of customers. However, they were missing out on so much more that could be done with the data that they were collecting. They had no clue to the value of the data and as much as I could tell them there was value to be derived from this data. They couldn't comprehend what I was saying. I blamed it on their shortsightedness. However, that wasn't the problem, they couldn't perceive what I was saying. I finally realized the only way to help them see, really see, what I was talking about was to build it for them.Over the last 12 years I have shifted more and more out of automation and into harvesting and using data to help customers really use their equipment effectively. In many cases I have built the initial data visualization platform for free just so the customer could see what is possible. Every time, they would pay for more. Over the past 5 years, I have focused exclusively on systems sold by Blentech to the food industry. The food industry is near and dear to my heart having been involved with it, off and on, for nearly forty years. During that time I recognized that this industry is slow to adopt change and needed a long time to mature to the point where it could recognize the value of data analytics. That time is now and building the AutoChef 2 and ARTIS systems for Blentech has been a blast! There is so much more than can be done with customers that can break free of their worn-out paradigms and see the values that can be derived in an IOT world centered around systems the contextualize data.
