Initially a hot metal compositor who took up scalpel and pen in his transition to paste up in the late 1970s.Taught himself to touch-type and retrained as a traditional typesetter in the early 1980s on a state-of-the-art, code-driven Scantext 1000.Reduced to common artworker on a Mac with QuarkXpress in the early 1990s.   As an ageing artworker from a traditional typesetting background (they don’t make them like this any more) I specialise in producing typographically and technically challenging artwork. Anything from annual reports and catalogues to university year books and other unwieldy stuff. To achieve the result we’re both looking for I focus on two specific things. First, assessing the design and content files to extract the relevant typographic and layout information. Then determining which of InDesign’s styles and style options will provide the best control and flexibility for each item in order to construct the artwork with the utmost control and efficiency.Then it’s just a matter of applying a bit of know-how to produce the desired result – properly styled, typographically consistent artwork of integrity.
