The annual production of surfactants is over 12 million tons (17 million tons in 2017) with an estimated value of USD 27 billion (USD 36.5 billion in 2017). Surfactants are mainly produced from non-renewable petrochemical resources and have a negative impact on the environment. A new alternative to synthetic surfactants are biosurfactants. Glycolipid biosurfactants such as rhamnolipids and sophorolipids can be produced on an industrial scale by microorganisms. They can be produced from renewable resources (e.g. waste) and are eco-friendly. In addition to their surface active properties anti-microbial/viral/fungal/cancer effects have been observed. http://inano.au.dk/biosurfactants Show less

This short-term position was a follow-up on my master thesis with the title "The Stability and Folding Mechanism of Outer Membrane Proteins". Results generated during my master thesis and as a research assistant laid the basis for further studies on the interaction between surfactants and outer membrane proteins. Several peer-reviewed articles have since been published concerning the folding mechanism and oligomerization of outer membrane proteins in surfactants.
