In some cases, bacteria develop resistance to more than one class of antibiotic, limiting the medical resources available to treat infections. For individual people and animals, this leads to increased risk associated with medical and surgical treatments, extended periods of illness and suffering, and more cases of treatment failure. Consequences for the community include increased fatality rates, more difficulty in eradicating infectious diseases, and greater expenditure on health. To address antibiotic resistance, we need to identify the selection pressures that are driving this evolutionary process and implement methods to reduce them. My research will address antibiotic resistance in the Riverina by:1. Identifying environmental reservoirs that pose the greatest risk for the emergence of new resistance genes, and likely pathways for dissemination of established resistance genes. 2. Investigating factors that influence antibiotic prescribing within our community. Show less
