I have more than 20 years experience as a journalist, science writer, editor and university public information officer. In my recent position as Senior Editor and Writer at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, I was part of a team that launched a new national magazine on research and clinical news in the field of pediatrics, and also contributed to a number of internal and external publications. I have now returned to my freelance career, which has included writing and editing assignments for the Boston Globe, Science magazine, ScienceNOW, BrainWork, and American Archaeology magazine, to name a few. I also have written for a number of university magazines, including those published by Kenyon College, Denison University, Sarah Lawrence College, and the University of Chicago School of Medicine. My writing experience includes in-depth feature articles as well as shorter spot-news stories that must be turned around in 24 hours. As the creating editor of three nationally award-winning university magazines, I have extensive background in magazine editing and publishing. My experience working with staff and freelance writers, photographers, designers, illustrators, and printers has resulted in many awards for writing and overall publication excellence. My work as a university science writer has garnered a number of national science writing awards. An active participant in the science writing field, I have served three terms as a board member of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and one term as president of the University Research Magazine Association. I served as co-chair of the NASW Education Committee for nine years, and was a co-creator of NASW's wildly popular Internship Fair, held each year at the AAAS annual meeting. I also launched a separate initiative for people who teach science writing, helping to bring together a community that is leading the next generation of science writers.
