From Doc McStuffins to Trauma Surgeon...Ever since watching Doc McStuffins and helping my younger sister with her countless paper cuts from doing school projects, I knew I wanted to go into medicine. Nothing comes close to watching someone feel healthier, happier, and more at ease because I helped them. That’s what inspires me. Between being a volunteer translator at my local food bank, shadowing an anesthesiologist this past summer, and serving as my family’s mini medic, I’ve spent many hours aiding people’s healthcare and linguistic needs. I especially love when medicine and linguistics intersect, as patients feel more at ease knowing someone speaks their language.As a volunteer translator at my local food bank, I helped all types of families from multiple walks of life’s during the primary check in, effectively translated Denton City food bank documents from English to Spanish and helped them pick out food from the food bank, which taught me the importance of patience, consistency, and hard work. In addition, I shadowed Dr. Marte Martinez at Laredo Advanced Spine Pain Solutions clinic. There I created a better patient intake process that sped up appointments by 15% and decreased patient stress by answering questions when possible , while learning the importance of certain medical practices and serving my community, ultimately learning how to be an effective caretaker.Now that I am completing my senior year at the University of North Texas, I am applying to several M.D programs to learn more about various pathologies and practices that make patients comfortable. I hope to be a trauma surgeon who aids people across the world, one who uses my Spanish to break down language and cultural barriers.
