I was brought into the City’s brand-new after school program and given free reign to design the curriculum and coordinate it all. It was the most fun I’d ever had. I supervised 10 awesome staff, a bunch of volunteers, and a whole lot of kids. One was a homework help/enrichment program, and the other a bilingual parent-child program for 1st and 2nd graders. In my 11 years with the City, here are a few of the things I accomplished: • Directed 3 children’s musicals • Created and led themed Family Fun Nights: hands-on learning experiences in science, history, literacy, math, and life• Developed science and math summer camps• Weekly themed Kids’ Clubs• Developed a program of take-home literacy bags for 1st and 2nd graders

15 preschoolers, all of whom have Down syndrome. Several of their mamas, helping out. And me-- guiding, playing, and helping the little ones explore letters and early literacy.

Teach English to international students. Some highlights: --teaching intonation with kazoos--cross-cultural exploration of personal space--creation, production, and presentation of the class play: The Christmas Pig

Scenario 1: One-room-schoolhouse setup, 25 kids ages 2-12 in a Brazilian motel room, singing and teaching in Portuguese. Scenario 2: English class in my living room with a group of college students. Our preferred learning system was listening to an American song and assembling the lyrics like a puzzle with strips of paper. Scenario 3: At a tiny table in the loft of a barn under one hanging light bulb, teaching basic math and Portuguese literacy to Brazilian adults.

Teaching English as a foreign language in the university classroom. Awesome students, great fun.

When international kids entered school speaking no English, my job was to teach them the basics. The kids, aged 5-9, were all from different countries: Yemen, China, Japan, etc. I spoke none of these languages, and had the challenge of teaching and keeping order almost entirely through hand gestures. I became an excellent mime.
