Working in several capacities with individuals with special needs initially piqued my interest in occupational therapy. I have always believed that as human beings, we have far more things in common than we have things that make us different. Helping others to live their fullest, most satisfying lives made it clear that pursuing a career in occupational therapy would be a perfect fit for me. I have always been interested in the healthcare professions, and my education helped to bring my passion for anatomy and neuroscience to life! I had the pleasure of being a teaching assistant for functional anatomy and clinical neuroscience courses for most of my graduate program. Through this position, I was able to gain an in-depth understanding of the incredible human body as well as realize that I truly enjoy teaching others because it allows me to share my passion(s). Working as a teaching assistant helped me to craft and refine my leadership abilities while also sharpening my clinical judgement and reasoning skills. I bring a variety of skills to the occupational therapy profession thanks to my experience working as a caregiver, ASL interpreter, preschool teacher, and birth doula. Each of these positions required me to understand how to communicate with clients and their family members. In addition, I needed to be able to embrace and appreciate individual circumstances, needs, strengths, and limitations. As occupational therapy continues to become more widely recognized, I hope to play an instrumental role in increasing its visibility and distinct value as a healthcare profession.
