Communication & Engagement Coordinator

Administrative & Professional Staff Association | Simon Fraser University

Burnaby, Bc, Canada

For over 8 years, I managed the strategic and day-to-day communications activities and initiatives for the Administrative & Professional Staff Association (APSA) at Simon Fraser University. This included a diverse range of tasks including content writing, graphic design, and social media management. One of my proudest accomplishments was developing and expanding APSA’s intranet/website to become a well-utilized member knowledge hub. On the site, I also introduced an Advocacy Corner, an online member community, which provided employment advice and support to APSA members.Working in a complex labour relations environment, my ability to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders allowed me to drive tasks and projects forward. Utilizing creativity, sensitivity, and empathy, I was able to quickly build trust across members, management, and committee participants. In this role, I initiated several extensive member surveys to gauge member awareness of APSA benefits and measure the effectiveness of our communications strategies. This data-driven approach informed my priorities moving forward, helping me build up robust communications tactics. At my core, I’m a writer so a favorite aspect of this job was putting together the monthly newsletter. I loved researching topics, interviewing people, and selecting the right content to publish that resonated with APSA members.I launched APSA’s presence on social media. Through extensive research, I found Twitter was most widely used in academic circles and successfully utilized this platform to interact with members and industry professionals as well as to market our events and promote content.A unique part of this role was providing administrative support to multiple APSA committees. I was relied upon to keep committee members on track to complete required tasks and documentation as well as to provide issues management advice pertaining to member questions/inquiries.
