Three things all students know about teachers: One, in the classroom the personality of the teacher is more important than the personality of the textbook. Two, in distance education the personality of the teacher is more important than the personality of the website. And three, the personality of the teacher is more important than any teaching tool.In summary: be authentic.I can't answer how to do this, but I know that everyday I think about it and try to be what I think it means. That's not touchy-feely. For me that's using an IS/IT background to teach non-IS/IT business people about data in all its many sides and extensions. Whether it's students at Conestoga or Humber College where I teach, or in technical course book revisions that I write for CPA Canada, or in seminars and training sessions for corporate clients. But it doesn’t stop there. My passion for IT is not in the bits and bites but in the possibilities. I look for new ways to connect data, to present data, to inform through data. Big Data essentials and visualization tools. This helps prepare my students for graduation into the workforce, and it lets them see data as a live thing, forever changing. We can't ignore the role of data in decision making. And we can't underestimate the need for all graduates to understand how to look at data, summarize it, analyze it, visualize it and present it in a way that makes it new and understandable. I think this is important. I think this is authentic.
