Graduate Research AssociateThe Ohio State University Aug 2017 - May 2023Columbus, OhioMy PhD research focused on using traditional bioinformatics approaches to investigate the role of soluble odorant-binding proteins in the chemosensory speciation and rapid diversification of telenomine wasps. RNA isolation and differential expression analysis allowed for the characterization and expression profiling of these proteins across various tissue types, helping to narrow down their role in sensing environmental chemical cues. I developed predicted 3D structures for 18 novel odorant binding proteins using machine learning and deep learning tools and conducted protein-ligand docking in-silico experimentation to assess the affinity of the proteins across a biologically-relevant odorant repertoire. I used phylogenetic analyses to identify orthologs across species within the same genus and across varying genera within the order Hymenoptera to evaluate the conservation or diversification of olfaction as it relates to host-specialization. This laid the groundwork for mapping the processing of odorants in a new model system: a biological control agent of an economically-relevant agricultural pest. -
