My long career began with theatrical lighting design and then lighting fixture design and manufacturing. These experiences allowed me to experiment with a vast array of light sources, various luminaire enclosures, lighting effects, operating gear, sophisticated lighting control systems and the NEC (National Electrical Code) compliance regulations. This motivated me to work in the Electrical Engineering realm to directly specify architectural lighting and its control and create luminaires for very specific applications- almost like theatre, creating specific lighting effects for certain scenes. I got more involved with the professional organizations like IESNA Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and was the first member of the IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers) in Wisconsin, my home state. Because of my interest in environmental and energy conservation, I also was the first professional lighting designer to become a LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S.Green Building Council in 2001.My passion in the lighting profession was always firmly rooted in a creative, human centered and architecturally holistic approach to illumination, from both natural daylight and efficient artificial lighting sources. I have spent most of my professional life in engineering firms thereby gaining a wider, more inclusive knowledge base.I am honored to say that, primarily because of the outstanding people I have had the pleasure to work with throughout my career, numerous national and international lighting design awards have been achieved under my direction. I attempt to keep every solution as technologically simple and easily maintainable as possible.I have authored and co-authored several significant lighting design standard guidelines for the government and educational sectors. I am now enjoying living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with my wife. The UP is a place of outstanding natural beauty, inspiration, wide waters of Lake Superior and long, dark dreary winters. We moved here because it seemed like a perfect place for an experienced lighting designer, a textile artist-sculptor, and our son's university experience at Michigan Technological University. After graduating, our son moved on to California, looking for gold instead of the copper found here in Copper Country.
