I served as a Registered Nurse within a large and diverse Emergency Department (ED), where I engaged in rotations across various units, encompassing pediatrics, adults, and a secure psychiatric ward. During a period when no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds were available, I assumed responsibility for the care of all ventilated ICU patients until suitable beds became accessible. The ED at UHC stands out as one of the busiest healthcare facilities in West Virginia, catering to the urgent medical needs of over 50,000 patients annually. This cutting-edge, 375-bed level 3 trauma center boasts state-of-the-art technology, carefully integrated to elevate patient privacy, streamline access, and serve the community. As an Emergency Room nurse, I played a pivotal role within this dynamic and fast-paced environment, dedicated to ensuring the swift and effective treatment of patients facing critical medical situations. On a typical shift, I collaborated closely with my attending physician to facilitate the care of an average of 32 patients, with a broad spectrum of acuity levels. My role also encompassed procedures such as the placement of NG tubes, Foley catheters, and the administration of both oral and intravenous medications, including essential fluid management. I monitored patients on telemetry, and in instances when housekeeping staff were scarce, I took the initiative to manage room turnovers. My varied responsibilities underscored my prowess in time management as a dedicated registered nurse.
