I am a speaker and writer, as well as a social activist.I have hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine solo, and raised seed money to help open a day shelter for the homeless. The RAM House Shelter in Roanoke, Virginia has served over one million meals since it opened.I have presented spiritual workshops at Shenandoah University to nursing students on the topic of spirituality for end of life care. My spiritual teachings include leading weekend Retreats on the spirituality of grief and loss at the Bon Secours Retreat Center in Marriottsville, Maryland.In past years years, I have served as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of numerous non-profit organizations, such as the West End Center for Inner City Youth in Roanoke, the Roanoke Area Ministers and more recently the community service FISH in Clarke County.My background includes extensive education in the field of spirituality, both Eastern and Western. I have a Doctor of Divinity Degree in Spirituality from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. and am also a graduate of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation. My education includes Doctoral studies in spirituality at New College, the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I am a graduate of Kubasaki High School, Okinawa.I grew up in a military family, and attended college on an Army R.O.T.C. Scholarship. My military experience as an officer includes graduation from the U. S. Army Chaplain School.I have published a small devotional book on the Appalachian Trail titled "My Walk With Christ on the Appalachian Trail". I have also written what I believe is the first historical and spiritual review of the ancient hospice movement, tracing the spirituality of hospice from the Middle Ages to modern times. The publication available on Amazon.com is "Journeying to the End of Life, Discovering the Ancient Hospice Way of Companioning the Dying". This is a groundbreaking book that calls for fundamentally reshaping the modern hospice movement to allow the journey of life to end at home.My life has spanned almost 50 years of active service as a parish minister, and I currently serve as both a full time hospice chaplain at Blue Ridge Hospice and a part time parish minister at the rural church Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church outside of Berryville, Virginia.I view myself as an active contemplative, seeking to be a vessel through which the light of the Divine Spirit may be revealed today. I have a passion for being a compassionate Presence and a Spiritual Director with those on the journey to the end of life.
