About Kenechi Omeke, Phd

Data Scientist with a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. My thesis worked at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet-of-Things (IoT), and looked at how machine learning tools (especially offline reinforcement learning) can be used to improve the networking of underwater sensors in large applications such as monitoring marine climate change.Passionate about AI and machine learning, and how new advances in these fields could help to address some of the global challenges of our time, such slowing climate change, addressing global inequalities and improving opportunities for all peoples, especially those in developing countries. I am also passionate about tech education, science communication and public engagement, and speak regularly at academic and social/community events.

Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Research, Microsoft Word, and 14 others.

Senior Data Scientist - Climate And Global Health

Current

Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom

Co-leading Platform development on the Wellcome Trust-funded project developing a transparent and globally generalisable framework and technical platform for official statistics on climate change and health. The Framework stream develops statistical methods for estimating climate-related health risks, including modelling local-level impacts, using real-world data sources. The Platform (hosted on the UN General Data platform) serves as a user-friendly central repository for climate-health data and hosts open-source tools for estimating climate-related health impacts. This allows authorised users to generate non-technical results and informative data visualisations, supporting analysts and policy makers from low- and middle-income countries with sound official statistics to improve climate policies and interventions.

Data Scientist - Data Science Campus

Newport, Wales, United Kingdom

Data Scientist working on the Treasury-funded Global Supply Chains Intelligence Programme (GSCIP), which is providing the UK withworld-leading AI/Machine Learning capability in supply chain mapping. I develop and apply state-of-the-art statistical and machine learning modelling tools, including NLP/LLM to build, enrich, and analyse global supply chains, helping to translate uncertainties into quantifiable risks and provide novel insights to policymakers. I employ a range of data science and analysis techniques to integrate commercial data with HMG data from different departments, creating new bespoke data assets to answer important policy questions. I use Python, R, and SQL to create reproducible analytical pipelines (RAP), mostly in Azure Databricks but also other cloud environments, to address emerging supply chains challenges.Contributions:• Building a variety of RAP pipelines for different projects including supply chains filtering and mapping, economic/production networks modelling, relationship extraction from text, analysing/predicting use of preferential utilisation rates, port activity measurement, etc.• Internal and external stakeholder engagement to translate business needs into practical data science solutions.• Training, mentoring, and supporting analysts and data scientists from other government departments.• Supporting organisational transformation by promoting best data science practices.

Iot Lead

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I created and teach the Internet-of-Things (IoT) track at the Computer Science Academy Africa workshops, an intensive 3-week workshop for scientists in African countries. The content uses carefully curated content to train the participants to go from zero to hero in a very short time. We start with the very basics of IoT, spending reasonable time to understand and explore all possible ways of working with LEDs to demonstrate I/O, pulse width modulation, control, etc and then move on to explore other IoT functionalities using cheap and readily available microcontrollers such as ESP32/ESP8266 and Raspberry Pi. I practically demonstrate analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and its applications in real life, naturally segueing into communications using the UART, SPI and I2C/I2S interfaces. The workshop aims to produce nearly industry-ready IoT developers through integration of different IoT components to realise projects that address the local challenges of local communities. The projects are deployed on standard IoT platforms with all the functionalities of industry-grade IoT visualisation and analytics. The energy of the participants is boundless and so infectious that it is nigh impossible to go halfway with them, and their creativity beyond imagination. This enthusiasm and the life-changing opportunities that our training open up to our trainees make the long hours all worth it.

Tutor And Volunteer

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

Co-prepared the Introduction to Machine Learning course for participants at the PWSA workshop 2021. Led the initiation and design of the coding competitions aspect of the course in 2022 to help our workshop participants apply their coding skills to real problem and keep them engaged in ongoing Python programming. Also scope out and work with partner and sponsor organisations to contribute real-life problems that can be solved using programming.

Research Assistant - Comp-O-Ran For 5G

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

Working on an exciting DCMS-funded project developing algorithms for Coordinated Multi-point Open Radio Access Network for 5G. The project focuses on non-ideal fronthaul implementation in Open-RAN for 5G massive MIMO. Evaluated options for HARQ processes for Open-RAN 5G and the implications on system performance (tolerable latency and throughput), as well as user-centric clustering options for Dynamic Point Selection (DPS) scheduling. Also investigated different configurations and trade-offs between HARQ processes and DPS with/without blanking and impact on system performance.

Phd Researcher

My PhD looked at the intersection between Machine Learning (ML) and the Internet-of-Things (IoT),with a focus in underwater applications. The oceans cover over 70% of the earth surface, regulate global temperatures (absorbs most of global CO2 and reflected outgoing radiation) and wind, and supply over a seventh of the global protein. However, we know more about deep space than we do about the oceans. Part of this knowledge gap stems from the difficulty of obtaining information from the deep oceans, as the environment is hostile to most communication technologies that work on land and in space. Underwater networking is prone to several difficulties due to the limited energy of battery-operated underwater sensor nodes and the harsh nature of the underwater environment to wireless signals propagation. Conventional tools for underwater networking are incapable of coping with the rapid changes in the underwater environment and the heterogeneous nature of networked underwater devices (Internet-of-Underwater-Things), which have diverse and often conflicting communication, computing/data processing, and energy requirements. More worryingly, the oceans are under threat from climate change arising from industrialisation, pollution, and human interference.I spent 4 years in the course of my PhD looking at these challenges and investigating how tools from the ML toolbox could enable underwater sensor devices to adapt to the rapidly-changing underwater conditions and optimize their performance. My key aim was to develop a cognitive networking framework to automate the operation of underwater sensors as possible to improve sustainability, leading to huge gains in terms of network throughput, reliability and energy efficiency. Reinforcement learning (RL) is naturally suited to these tasks, so I developed RL algorithms that were trained offline and them deployed in simulated underwater network environments to improve the performance of resource-constrained sensor nodes.

President And Founder

Glasgow University Engineering Technology Society

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I co-started the Engineering Technology Society to provide an avenue for professional engineers in the academia and industry to share the valuable lessons they have learnt on their professional journeys to enable students make informed career choices and develop the right kind of skills whilst still at uni. We are the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Glasgow, where I serve as the Branch Chair. We provide a platform for engineering students to network, share ideas and learn about the latest developments in engineering technology from experts. We run academic and industry events monthly (sometimes weekly) - as well as career workshops - to bring these visions to life. At a time when the coronavirus pandemic has altered so much about higher education, we bring people together to network and have fun while doing so.
