Editor
The Strafford Regional Planning Commission (SRPC) is one of nine regional planning commissions in New Hampshire, one of four metropolitan planning organizations, and a designated economic development district. As editor, I ensured the commission's transportation planning, economic development, and other documents meet editorial, technical, and graphics standards to further the organization's objectives in supporting its member communities. To do this, I edited documents for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, and style; rewrote text as necessary to make them more readable, succinct, and straightforward; established document formatting styles and editorial conventions; and collaborated with the communications and outreach specialist on document layout and design.
Stewardship Writer
In this position, I collected information and drafted reports and other correspondence for the Stewardship Office that described the impact of philanthropy on the people and programs of Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the nation's leading private boarding secondary schools. These reports to alumni and friends of the Academy covered a variety of topics related to the school's operation, including faculty professional development, college scholarships, summer school, and other programs. I also updated donors on the more than 350 recipients of financial aid awards and prizes supported by more than 250 endowed and current-use funds.
Writer, Editor, Communications Professional
I offered strong writing and editing skills, as well as wide-ranging communications experience, to public- and private-sector clients in a variety of disciplines, particularly energy and the environment. In addition to providing top-notch written work, I improved the organization, style, grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling of reports, proposals, web copy, and other materials written by clients. My work helped clients achieve their programmatic and business goals and raise their visibility with potential customers and other stakeholders.
Senior Associate
As a senior associate, I provided a broad range of writing, editing and graphics support to members of the Cadmus staff and to an array of public- and private-sector clients including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state environmental agencies. Among my areas of expertise were corporate communications, the development of outreach and public education materials, the development and editing of manuals and technical reports, and the development of training materials. I also edited and oversaw the production of many multimillion dollar competitive proposals
Staff Writer
While on the staff of this national business magazine (130,000 circulation), I researched and wrote feature articles analyzing computer implementation and use issues. I also organized tables, charts and graphs to enhance content and usefulness of my feature stories. And I wrote a monthly section alerting readers to releases of significant new software. No longer in publication, Business Computer Systems was published by Cahners Publishing Co. (now Reed Business Information).
Associate Editor
As an associate editor (and as a freelance writer before joining Bartex), I identified and reported on significant trends and developments in consumer electronics, computer, and durable goods retailing for several national-circulation business magazines targeting dealers of all sizes. I researched, wrote and edited news and features stories and headlines to meet readers' need for information to enhance their business operations. I also selected photos and assigned graphics and illustrations to the art department to complete feature packages.
Freelance Writer And Editor
Freelancing gave me the opportunity to publish articles on diverse topics including the environment, health, and business for publications serving a wide range of readers. During this period I also served as managing editor for the premiere issue of Mass. Health Care magazine, published by the Massachusetts Hospital Association. And I edited and managed several weekly newspapers, which taught me the fundamentals of lay out while supervising staff and freelance reporters and photographers.
Reporter
Working for a newspaper can provide a great introduction to how the world works, as well as an opportunity to hone writing and editing skills. As a reporter for this 20,000-circulation daily in central Connecticut, I wrote hard news, features, editorials, and op-ed pieces. I also photographed breaking news and took photos for feature stories. My first assignment was to cover news and generate feature stories in a suburban town. I was responsible for reporting on the municipal government, politics, public safety and education. Later, I worked as city-side beat reporter covering public safety, including two murders, municipal finance, water utility, local labor activities, politics and city government.
