Graduate Student Researcher
• During my PhD, I worked with collaborators on a myriad of projects and gained experience writing scientific publications, giving presentations at conferences, teaching undergraduate engineering courses and writing grants. Succinctly described below are some projects I worked on.•Developed a new mathematical model for mixing limitation at the REV scale using mixing ratios and exposure time to the flow field for bimolecular equilibrium and kinetic reactions. We present analytical solutions to the constant dispersion case and a finite difference case for dispersion as a function of exposure time ( a separate dimension from time). •Developed inverse model in PEST for moisture diffusivity model for cement-based materials in order to attain parameters for diffusion, relative humidity and other parameters that characterize mortar and fly ash.• Contributed to a radial mixing limited equilibrium reaction problem. Specifically validating a quasi-analytical model for multicomponent equilibrium reactive transport in idealized 2D radial flow in a homogenous aquifer. Developed quasi-analytical solution in the case where dispersive spreading is not contemporaneous with mixing. • Determined the optimal sampling frequency for experimental datasets for enzymes that follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The datasets for this study came from ureolytic kinetics which is essential for modeling MICP (microbially induced calcite precipitation). Studied the effect of sampling frequency on the parameter space. • Lab experience involves measuring free chlorine and conducting falling head permeameter tests. Chemistry work involves using PHREEQC for batch modeling of free chlorine and chlorination by products. Developed an initial reactive transport model in COMSOL of biofilm in a potable water pipe section. Using Avizo and Solidworks to bring a 3D scan of a biofilm coupon in order to create geometry and mesh of a complex structure.
Graduate Student Researcher
In the summer of 2015, a meter scale 2D MICP (microbially induced calcite precipitation) experiment was conducted where the effects of calcite development between inoculated and native ureolytic bacteria were compared. In order to model the aqueous and solid phase data that were collected, we developed a 2D transient reactive transport model with a complex well injection/withdrawal scheme in PHT3D. This was a coupled flow and reactive transport model.• Evaluated biological parameters and used various inverse techniques in order to characterize dynamics of sessile and motile bacteria within the porous media.• Developed and validated a reaction network in PHREEQC and used inverse modeling to attain biogeochemical kinetic parameters.• Used Matlab to create various visualization codes to display modeled time series output.
Geographic Information Systems Analyst
Marine Corps Installations West, Encroachment Control Planning Services (San Diego Co., CA)• Project Lead for GIS subtask which included multiple products: (few illustrated here)• Development of a database architecture system that enable MCIWEST and GEOFIDELIS to set up and manage a large GIS database.• 3D rendering of the Mojave Desert to South of the Salton Sea, with all existing renewable energy infrastructure, Military Training Routes, Special Use Airspace on terrain with imagery overlay.U.S. Marine Corps, Encroachment Control Planning and Partnering Services (San Diego Co., CA)• Lead GIS member of the Real Estate Acquisition Strategy for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Air Station Miramar, a GIS based analysis which prioritizes potential real estate acquisitions and collaborative partnerships to promote compatible land use buffers and enhance flexibility to satisfy environmental compliance requirements.March Air Reserve Base (Riverside, CA)• GIS support to the compatible land use strategy for March Air Reserve Base.• Duties include compiling data, research and creating maps with the goal of creating a GIS based analysis which prioritizes potential real estate acquisition and collaborative partnerships to promote compatible land use buffers.
