Designed and implemented machine learning algorithms and statistical models for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) by creating software in Java, R, Python, and SQL Server. Created Java-based tool that used machine-learning algorithms to identify and visualize radiological substances in near real-time. Tool in use by CBP Teleforensic center. Created ad hoc reports and statistical analyses using regression techniques (linear, Poisson, and logistic), Monte Carlo simulation, clustering, and data visualization in R. Collaborated with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University to create a machine-learning application for identifying radiological materials. Created user interface, performed software integration, and lead field testing for this project at the Port of Tacoma.

Wrote three contract deliverables that described different machine learning models that were implemented on high-priority subjects chosen by CBP. Conducted aviation-related simulation-based studies for NASA. Was a key member of the Sensis team that executed the NASA New Vehicle Integration NRA—a $6M project that examined the future of US aviation—that was completed in December 2009. Helped with experimental design and analysis and writing of the final report. Completed a project for the Air Force that helped assess the impact of Special Use Airspace on commercial aviation. Created the analysis methodology, algorithms, and visualization software. Wrote proposals for several NASA research grants related to environment. Wrote a paper, “A Method for Identifying Connected Flights in Aviation Schedules,” that won the Best Professional Paper Award (3rd Place) at the Integrated Communications Navigation and Surveillance (ICNS) Conference in May 2011. Wrote a sophisticated general-purpose visualization program (comprising 300 java classes) that was used for many projects. Laid off from Sensis on October 13, 2011, due to a downturn in business that resulted in the company’s being sold and closure of the Reston office.sold.

Developed algorithms and techniques for assessing National Airspace System (NAS) performance at MITRE’s Center for Advanced Aviation Systems Development (CAASD). Mined large datasets and developed visualization software and computer algorithms using Java, Oracle PL/SQL, and Visual Basic. Created many visualization tools and presentations that were well received and widely used. Spoke at professional conferences sponsored by NEXTOR, AIAA, INFORMS, TRB, FAA and other organizations. Several times ranked among the top 10 percent of employees and received three awards. Published a paper in the December 2006 issue of The Journal of Transportation Research Forum, a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
