ASUK works in partnership with Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham to deliver a highly specialised service, funded by NHS England. As a patient led organisation, the needs and wishes of people affected by AS remain at the heart of everything we do. We aim to; provide personalised support, raise awareness, conduct pioneering research, and enable better treatments and monitoring through the AS multi-disciplinary clinics. ASUK co-founded Breaking Down Barriers in partnership with The Sylvia Adams Charitable Trust.Breaking Down Barriers is a network of over 60 organisations providing support to people affected by rare and genetic conditions. We work together to learn, develop, and share good practice. Promoting equity, diversity and inclusion is at the centre of what we do. Our Experts by Experience Advisory Group help us to understand the lived experiences of people from diverse and marginalised communities who are affected by rare and genetic conditions. We create safe spaces for learning and collaboration, deliver training and run a community outreach project. We unite and strive for equitable access to services and support for all.Kerry has lived experience as her son is diagnosed with AS which is an ultra-rare and complex condition. Alström Syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition meaning that both parents must carry one copy of the ALMS1 gene with a significant mutation to have an affected child. It is an extremely rare, progressive and complex condition and there continues to be very little awareness amongst the medical profession, therefore leading to a delay in diagnosis. Alström Syndrome is one of a group of conditions known as ciliopathies. Cilia are essential to many of the body’s organs and a diagnosis of Alström Syndrome can potentially impact on every organ in the body. Symptoms of the condition include Cone-Rod Dystrophy, Hearing Loss, Diabetes, Cardiomyopathy, Liver and Kidney issues, Fibrosis and other associated conditionsASUK is a patient led organisation and we provide support to people throughout the UK who are affected by Alstrom Syndrome. We work in partnership with clinicians in Birmingham to deliver NHS England Highly Specialised Multi-disciplinary Clinics and continue to strive to ensure all of the needs of our families are being met. We liaise with all professionals involved with individuals and families to help develop their understanding of the condition and the impact a diagnosis can have. We offer a family support service, promote research and support clinical trials.

Breaking Down Barriers (BDB) is a network of patient organisations, support groups and community networks working together to develop supportive and inclusive services for individuals and families affected by genetic conditions. Addressing health inequalities is at the centre of what we do and working at grass roots level, we are identifying ways to improve engagement with people from ethnic minority communities and helping to shape services to become inclusive and accessible.BDB was set up in 2016 with funding from The Sylvia Adams Charitable Trust and has recently received additional funding from The National Lottery Community Fund. BDB facilitates people to come together and share examples of good practice, develop action plans and review learning and engagement. Many of the individuals and families supported by the BDB network experience barriers to accessing mainstream services. Patient organisations, support groups and community networks are best placed to offer unique support, enabling and empowering people to make informed choices and helping to bridge the gap between services. As the National Development Manager for Alstrom Syndrome UK, I lead the BDB project with strategic direction from an advisory board, including patient representatives, clinicians and academic researchers and with guidance from The Sylvia Adam's Charitable Trust.
