I was offered a position as crew on the inaugural Westpac Helicopter Rescue Team in mid-2008. I joined five crew in Queensland for intensive training. We started the WA Helicopter service in late 2008. My role as senior professional crew (or Air Crew) involved: • Accountability for Flight & rescue mission planning and execution. • Navigation.• Communications. • Documentation.• Team and emergency response management duties as required to ensure the rescue helicopter meets and exceeds the public expectations to keep our coastline safe. • Maintaining, and ensuring we remain within, OPS (Operational Protocol Guidelines) and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). • Plan and respond to calls for assistance from the public, volunteer beach patrols, Lifeguards (including, SLSWA itself, the Police (mainly Water Police), FESA, AMSA, Defense Department, Department of Fisheries and volunteer sea rescue groups.• Supervise other crew members as required (crew of 20).• Prepare and participate in staff training programs.• Research & test new technologies to improve the efficiency of the service.• Make recommendations and implement initiatives that include staffing, operational procedures, equipment and beach facilities to maximize efficiency and safety of the operation.• Check & Maintain all equipment including communication equipment lifesaving and first aid supplies etc.• Provide accurate written reports relating to major incidents and compile daily report/log forms.• Attend & represent the team at Coronial inquiries as required.• Plan and deliver fundraising events, public relations visits and presentations to promote the service to major stakeholders, sponsors and members of the public including school groups.As part of this role, I completed the AIIMS (Australasian Inter-Service Incident Management System) certificate with the WA Police.
