About Kevin Willis

Hello! Thanks for coming to my LinkedIn page! My name is Kevin Willis and I am a professional with six years of full time experience in office management, event planning, talent recruiting & development, and professional writing. I also work on writing my own works, primarily fiction focusing on the Appalachia region. My professional area of focus is in serving others and helping develop my talent to be the best versions of themselves. Helping my team and peers to learn new processes or skills and seeing the "light bulb" moment happen when they learn something is always my favorite thing to see as it means I've been able to help them grow and learn. I believe in bringing a personable, friendly, and learner focused mindset into the workspace to create and facilitate a proactive & open environment. I am a proud alumni of EKU (2013 AND 2015!) and Kentuckian. Growing up in Appalachia and working primarily at institutions focused on serving the region has helped impact my growth and development as a professional. Because of this, I have dedicated myself to pay it forward and pass on the same lessons and kindness I received in my journey to those I work with. I currently serve at a fantastic institution, Berea College, as a part of the Campus Visits Team to help educate and link prospective students to learn more about the college in our Admissions Office. Send me a message if you'd like to chat more or connect with me! I am always happy to get to know others, share ideas or processes, or simply connect. Ask me about my favorite stories working in residence life and campus visits over the years. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Campus Visits & Events Associate

Berea, Kentucky, United States

I currently serve in the Office of Admissions as one of the Campus Visits & Events Associates. In this role I serve as a key member of the Campus Visits Team and am responsible for a variety of areas to ensure that our prospective students and their guests have a positive and great experience visiting Berea College! I actively supervise a team of students that focus on providing customer service and scheduling visits over the phone as well as maintain our guest cottage, Sturt Cottage. I also manage and am responsible for the upkeep of our office building and guest cottage, manage our departmental Outlook Calendar, and serve as a member of our Work Supervisor Team with other student supervisors. This role has allowed me to really focus in on development and learning for my students as I have had to take charge in scheduling, developing, and implementing their training curriculum. I also have had the pleasure of working with other departments in the office to support the mission, goals, and values of the Admissions Office, and the College itself.

Oct 2018 - Jun 2022

Office Assistant

Richmond, Ky

I served the Office of Housing & Residence Life as a temporary Office Assistant from the months of July 2018 through August 2018 and September 2018 through October 2018. In this role I supported the office and its mission to provide service to all guests and residents on campus. I assisted with Move-In Weekend 2018 and also helped manage and supervise multiple Facilities related tasks and projects in the residence halls.

Jul 2018 - Oct 2018

Residence Hall Coordinator

Richmond, Kentucky, United States

I served in this role after receiving my Master's degree. In this role I was able to manage and be the key contact for the assigned residential communities I worked with. This meant I was the point person for resident concerns, issues, and other inquiries related to the buildings I managed. I also served on a first responder as part of the office's RHC on Call rotation, where I responded to calls and emergency issues after hours throughout the year. In this role I am most proud of my work serving on multiple committees within the office, including our Diversity Committee, Student Staff Selection Committee, and our Residential Curriculum Development Committee. In particular, my work as a Chair of the Diversity Committee was implementing and launching the first ever "Tunnel of Oppression" program as a campus-wide community event. Additionally, I was also able to manage and supervise the selection process of our Community Receptionists during the 2018 Recruitment Season. This experience was extremely transformative for me as it helped improve my critical thinking & communication skills, but also allowed me to step up and become a leader in even more ways than I had in the past. In particular, the experience I gained in crisis response, building management, and event planning has also served me well as I transitioned into my current role at Berea College.

Jul 2015 - Jun 2018

Graduate Assistant

Richmond, Kentucky, United States

In this position I served as a Graduate Assistant in the Office of Admissions focusing on Academic Initiatives and Programming in the residence halls. In this role I supervised students that did educational programs and mentorship in our first-year residence hall community, ConneXtions, and also managed our Student Academic Success Team, a team of tutors that provided services in the residence halls for students to get tutoring without leaving their residence hall. I also worked with various academic events and initiatives hosted through the Housing Office as well as serving as part of the after-hours Night Desk on Call Team as needed. This was an amazing opportunity that taught and gave me the foundation for many of the skills and philosophies I use as a professional today.

Aug 2013 - May 2015

Admissions Intern

Richmond, Ky

I served the EKU Office of Admissions as an intern during the Fall 2014 semester. During this time I primarily focused on working on writing and developing written communication for domestic and international prospective students. This included updating call scripts for their call center, reviewing and updating e-mail communications, and assisting in the supervision of their call center students. I also was able to attend signature Admissions events, high school visits, and college fairs to learn more about the Admissions Counselors and the work they do to inform others about EKU.

Sep 2014 - Dec 2014

Break Desk Worker

During Academic Breaks, primarily in the Summer, I served as part of the Break Desk Team to support students and camps staying on campus during the break periods. I supervised guest entry and check-in, reported issues and concerns to on call staff, and helped provide a cheerful environment for when guests entered the building.

May 2014 - Aug 2014

Resident Assistant

Richmond, Ky

I served as a Resident Assistant (RA) in Walters Hall at EKU as part of the Next Steps Living Learning Community (LLC). My work as an RA had me serve as a leader and advocate for the residents on my floor. I served up to 20 residents at one time and planned both educational and social events for the floor, the LLC, and the residence hall as a whole. I also worked at our Front Desk to greet residents and their guests, distributed residential mail, and served as part of the On Call rotation to address student issues and concerns after hours. This job helped me realize my passion and love for helping others to learn and grow, which helped me realize this was an area of strength for me.

Aug 2011 - May 2013

Student Proctor

Albany, Ky

During the Summer of 2010, I served part-time as a Student Proctor for Interactive Television (ITV) courses on the Clinton Campus of Somerset Community College. In this role, I attended courses with students where the Professor was teaching in a different location, serving as a facilitator to assist any technical issues, questions, or classroom disruptions due to the Professor not physically being there. I assisted in proctoring exams, quizzes, and homework assignments, communicating with the Professor to ensure all student work was received and distributed properly.

May 2010 - Aug 2010

Upward Bound Student Tutor

I served as a tutor to students in the Somerset Community College Upward Bound program at the Somerset Community College Clinton Center campus housed in Albany, KY. In this role I provided after school tutoring and support to a small number of students each week.

Oct 2008 - May 2009

Data Entry Clerk

Sourcecorp

Monticello, Ky

I served as a Data Entry Clerk working with specific contracts to perform needed data entry for historical documents. In this role, I would access and receive scanned paper documents and input them into a computer system to digitize and archive the documents. On the very few instances when my work was needing corrections, I would be informed by quality control and asked to correct it immediately. This was my first job ever (outside of helping on projects around the house) and helped me learn a lot about myself and gaining a strong work ethic. Due to needing to focus on school, I left this position when my current role and contract was let go by the contractor.
