As a CapTech Consultant I was strategically placed as a Business Analyst for the Technology and Product group at Comcast working with the X1 Platform. While it didn’t allow for a lot of data science work, it was a vital position within Comcast to help grow B2B X1 platform partners. This position required calmness in high pressure situations as well as a strong presence to communicate with challenging stakeholders. A true test of patience and communication. As a part of my position there I analyze business requirements for stakeholders from multiple teams and perform ad-hoc analysis, create automated reports and present findings. I also design interactive Tableau reports to highlight various business performance metrics and improve X1 platform performance. In addition to platform performance I lead account reconciliation process to accurately bill Comcast partners. Additionally I have created automated ETL jobs in Pentaho to assist in financial billing. Just prior to my departure to Austin, TX, I had developed a strong business case to start doing more analytics in Redshift, Spark, Hive, Splunk, and others. Analysis was to commence in the next sprint, so I was disappointed to leave, but also excited for my next position. It was bittersweet.

  • Aetna
Manager Of Risk Adjustment, Medical Economics Data Scientist | Jr Medical Economics Data Scientist
    Aetna Apr 2009 - Oct 2015
    Hartford, Connecticut, Us
This position was a data science position before data scientist existed! Our group worked closely with the medical affairs department, finance and accounting departments. We created a from scratch business intelligence reporting suite, replicated medical statistical journals with in house data, and forecasted across all lines of business. The most utilized piece of work I accomplished while at Aetna was a revenue and risk score forecasting tool created in SAS. It projected mid-year and year end revenue for accurate accounting guidance. This earned the 2014 Chairmen’s Award for driving risk adjustment revenue above operating plan along with others in the department. As a part of the forecasting process, I worked with third party vendor to accurately provide accounting guidance for revenue received for Medicare products by analyzing large data sets in SAS, investigating variances, correct vendor methodology errors, and summarized into reports for high level management. Before the Aetna acquisition, I created a hospital readmission reports to support the Medical Affairs Department that improved patient quality of service and reducing plan spending, resulting in a decrease in readmission rates by over three percent. This was the front part of every data science project, extracting data, cleaning and manipulating, exploratory analysis, reports and intricate SAS code to accurately identify patient records to feed into a reporting suite.A few additional data science projects that allowed for a lot of creativity and SAS programming: identified fraudulent and abusive prescription drug activity by physicians and members utilizing outliers and classification models, predicted future utilization and costs utilizing a predictive medical condition model, calculated quarterly Professional Shortage Area Bonus Payments through researching government regulations, accessing data across multiple platforms, and writing SAS programs to accurately process for payment.
  • F.A. Davis Company
    Data Science Consultant
    F.A. Davis Company Apr 2014 - Sep 2014
Partnering with my graduate studies program, FA Davis asked for a graduate to help forecast textbook sales for the next fiscal year. While doing exploratory analysis on their data, I determined it would possible not only to help predict sales for the following year, but to give them a self sufficient tool with a few inputs that they could run year over year. I can happily say, It still works today.I explored several methods, Simple Exponential Smoothing, Holt Winter’s Exponential Smoothing, ARIMA as well as simple linear regression with seasonal dummy variables and as expected, not one was perfect for both short term or year long forecasts. I ended up creating a tool that identified significant outliers while fitting the data and smoothed the remaining estimates for the overall forecasts. The end user only needed to input the data in the correct format, run a few tasks, look for the obvious (I made it blinding) exclusions and copy the output for their formatted worksheets. They were very happy with the results and I think it was a huge success!
  • Unitedhealth Group

This was my first job out of college and a great start for my career. The primary focus was filing rates in every state once a year for Medicare Supplement plans. When I first started I was primarily utilized to prepare rate filings. After my first promotion I was in charge of calculating the trends that helped develop the rates and after my second promotion I was in charge of calculating the rates, discounts and filing the more challenging rates all of which was done in Excel. Right before the end of my four year career at United, I was part of the team that revamped the way we submitted rates by identifying, developing, and implementing new rating strategies, significantly improving the company’s competitive position and honored with the 2007 Innovations Award.Any project that fell on my plate received a makeover and improved process to update. I streamlined a newly designed rate and discount model that allowed for individual plan rating strategies to develop more than 3,000 plans. I also created a supplemental rating model to predict and identify future rates not meeting minimum filing standards saving valuable time during the restricted rate filings process. Lastly I remolded the Benchmark Filings cutting filing time in half and significantly improving the process to file them.I had a good experience with UnitedHealth Group and was able to achieve a good amount of success working there, but in order for me to continue to grow and advance in my career I had to find a new opportunity with new challenges.
