About Khaleel Johnson

I am deeply passionate about the intersections of art, migration and cultural innovation.Community and identity have been the common denominators throughout my work, from Trojan Records (BMG) to London Fashion Week, HE.SHE.THEY to Soho House and more recently Barbican Centre and Ballantine's helping mentees facilitate equitable workshops across the creative arts. My craving for diverse representation within cultural institutions has augmented by founding Conformity Magazine (print issue centring LGBTQ+ storytelling stocked in Sweden, Spain, South Korea and Portugal) and DJ’ing which both acted as tools to create joint experiences. During my time at Soho House, I was fortunate to work on live projects with the likes of Janet Jackson, Erykah Badu, Kerri Chandler, Little Simz, Thundercat, Sugababes, Self-Esteem, The Blessed Madonna and more. This is without mentioning the range of engaging workshops, talks, dinners and screenings which I have been able to be part of. The previous role I held within the company was as a Membership Manager, whereby I was responsible for building communities and programming local events in cities where we do not yet have physical Houses. My region was comprised of UK, Ireland and Scandinavia. This later led to Stockholm and Copenhagen both gaining physical Houses plus a Manchester House being on its way. My desire to remain curious about the industry has made me an expert when it comes to knowledge of relevant artists, festivals, venues and production. Set to start my postgraduate degree in MSc International Tourism Destination Management at Edinburgh Napier University in 2024 focusing on diaspora studies, eco-tourism, festivals and human geography. Currently, I have a First-Class Bachelor’s degree in Advertising, PR and Branding from Middlesex University and used my undergraduate degree to explore my passion for travel. This includes doing a six month voluntary work placement in Barcelona; learning Spanish, web design and consumer culture as well as interning at global events such as Advertising Week Europe. During the pandemic I lost my job in events and used the extra time I had to propel my skills and experiences by learning Portuguese, Music Production and taking an online course in Audience Segmentation.Want to connect? This initiative is a £100,000 fund which has been set up to support organisations actively working to achieve core ideals globally. In a world still unpicking the dominance of colonial conditioning, the focus here is on supporting emerging local music-focused organisations and collectives, to help elevate their essential work as they strive for equality in music. This in turn feeds into the global zeitgeist, helping to create a positive shift and more balance and fairness across the board. Each group will be awarded £10,000 to contribute to their work and Ballantine’s will be following their journey to understand how this funding will impact their work. This year, the 10 recipients include several African outfits spearheading progressive and inclusive businesses that are helping to provide a solid foundation for their local communities. Show less
