Short Summary of Position:Under the supervision of a Supervising Civil Engineer, plan, design, and prepare engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and estimates for various civil engineering projects. Projects consist of transportation design following City and State Standards and Manuals. Responsibilities:*Plan, design, and prepare complicated engineering calculations, details, and negotiate the design and preparation of drawings, specifications, and estimates for construction and maintenance of civil engineering projects*Conduct field surveys to develop topographic information for project design*Prepare and administer contracts and contract documents*Review project plans and specifications submitted by other Agencies*Use computer programs and surveying equipment to generate and prepare detailed engineering drawings*Act as the project manager for public works contracts*Inspect or direct inspection of construction and maintenance projects

Caltrans Transportation Engineer Perform structural section design and prepare reports for Design, Permits and Construction Units to ensure proposed and existing structural sections are consistent with the Department's standards. By utilizing scientific calculators, computers and Mechanistic-Empirical software in accordance with Department Policy Memos, Roadway Rehabilitation Manual and the Highway Design Manual. Determine the characteristics of existing pavement and soils for use in structural section design calculations. Plan and perform field investigations by visually examining the pavement and the surrounding area. Use the data provided by the Falling Weight Deflector to determine the required overlay on the existing pavement. Maintain effective liaison with functional units, consultants, other agencies, and the public in order to provide timely, complete, and accurate responses to requests for analyses, reports, and other related materials services. Manage AASHTO Quality Management System and update all the necessary records per AASHTO requirements.
