Enrollment Vista

Lansing, Michigan, United States

Served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member to build capacity for higher education institutions in Michigan to mitigate the college enrollment crisis that occurred as a result of COVID-19.During my service I helped lead projects that came out of our Rapid Response Enrollment Taskforce to connect students and higher education institutions. I led the collection of student directory information for current juniors and seniors from all high schools in the state and sharing them securely with colleges so they could use the information for recruitment efforts. In total, we collected around information for around 89,000 students. As an alternative for schools who weren't able or comfortable sharing that information, I created a survey that allowed all high schools students to voluntarily provide information that was shared similarly with colleges. We received over 2,000 responses. Over half (45) of the higher education institutions in the state accessed our data.I also helped launch MCAN's College Access Virtual Assistant (CAVA), which is a statewide chat bot powered by AI to answer anybody's college going questions. I led the development of the bot until we were able to transition it to a full-time staff member.I also helped create a resource we use for CAVA which is the Michigan Institution Updates website, which has information on all 84 public and private, 2 and 4 year institutions in the state of Michigan. This is a live site we will continue to update throughout the years so it can stay a relevant resource for Michigan students and counselors.

Student Success Coach | City Year Americorps Member

Greater Denver Area

During my year of service with City Year, I served approximately 1400 hours providing attendance, behavioral, and academic interventions to 21 specific "focus list" students, as well as overall classroom support in three periods of freshman-level English. In classes, I made sure to check in and offer extra support to students on my academic focus list. For those on my attendance list, I also checked in with them whenever I saw them. If they missed a class earlier in the week and I saw them another day, I would approach them to see what was going on and how I could support them in getting to class. The six students on my behavior focus list completed a survey called the Holistic Student Assessment multiple times throughout the school year that allowed me to see where they thought their strengths and weaknesses are. Based on that data and my conversations with them, we created goals and checked in at the beginning of each week to monitor their progress and adjust goals when appropriate. Positive contacts home were also important to engage guardians in their child's school life and encourage the student. I also served as the Behavior Coordinator for my school team and organized four events celebrating student behavior and growth over the year. For these events and others hosted by others on my team, I regularly made phone calls and sent emails for in-kind donations. When our school transitioned to remote learning in March due to COVID-19, I adapted to remote service and supported the school in their efforts to keep students engaged, including phone calls home each week to those with missing assignments. The City Year team also jumped in to create and host online spaces for students to receive academic help as well as socialize. I specifically created a "Silent Reading Club" where students could set aside an hour a week specifically to read whether it was for class or for fun.

Team Leader

Eloy, Arizona

During my time at Youth Haven Desert Ranch I worked in collaboration with my coworkers to create content for our weekend and week-long camps, as well as a weekly Kids Club program in the local community. I was responsible for delivering messages and presentations I created to the youth during our programs. We also performed a skit at each camp that conveyed the overarching message we were teaching. As a team leader I was directly responsible for a group of 6-8 disadvantaged youths, varying from ages 7 to 13, each week during our three- and five-day camps. The majority of the youth I worked with had psychological disorders, including trauma. I also gained experience in mandatory reporting during my time there. In terms of office work I filed paperwork for each youth that attended camp the previous week, maintaining alphabetical order and created new files for new attendees. I also cleaned out the filing cabinets every couple months to remove any aged-out campers that we no longer needed the paperwork for.

Children'S Programs Intern

Lansing, Michigan Area

My responsibilities as an intern in Michigan are very similar to those described above when I was on staff full time in Arizona. In addition to caring for youth over three-day camps, I also organized a toy drive at Spring Arbor University for Youth Haven's Christmas camps with a total of 13 gifts donated.

Assistant Manager

Cedar Valley Wild Frontier Fun Park

Comins, Mi

I began working at Cedar Valley's Fun Park in the summer of 2016 after my first year of college and returned for the next two years. My first two years were spent as a Ride Operator, and in my third year I was promoted to Assistant Manager. At the park I was responsible for operating vintage carnival rides and ensuring the safety of all riders and observers. I gained invaluable customer service skills as I assisted families with children of all ages around the park and leave them with a positive experience. I also operated the register and was trusted with opening and closing procedures, including the end of the week deposit count.About halfway through my second summer I began coming in on weekdays when the park was closed to the public to work on general improvements, such as cleaning the rides and general store, landscaping, and more.

General Operations

Cedar Valley Golf Club

Comins, Mi

I began working at Cedar Valley Golf Club in the summer of 2016 after they lost an employee and they thought I would be a good fit based on my work at the Fun Park. While there I provided in-person and over-the-phone customer service by taking tee times and operating the register for customers. I was also left in charge of opening and closing frequently based on that week's schedule.I also worked at the golf club in August 2018 after a similar situation to 2016 and they brought me over from the fun park again. I was a reliable employee who came back for three summer seasons and they knew that they could rely on me.
