About Kiley Seitz

My research interest focuses on expanding and exploring the archaeal domain through the discovery of novel organisms and metabolic pathways. I have performed metagenomic assembly and binning on environmental samples from the White Oak River estuary, Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone, Deepwater Horizon oil spill, San Francisco Bay and the Guaymas Basin Hydrothermal Vent System. This research has allowed us to better understand the geochemical role of microbes by allowing us to equate microbial metabolism to nutrient cycling in these environments. During my PhD, I contributed to our understanding of this domain by examining the presence and diversity of the Asgard superphylum in sedimentary environments. This newly discovered archaeal taxon revolutionized our view of the tree of life (Zaremba-Niedzwiedzka et al. Nature 2017). My research analyzed the presence and metabolic potential of these archaea from diverse sediments. During my research, I described two novel phyla, identified over 70 members of the Asgard archaea and provided the first metabolic description of an Asgard archaeum (Seitz et al. ISME 2016). Along with uncovering novel archaea my research focuses on the metabolic potential of different archaeal groups. My research resolved several methyl-coenzyme reductase-like (Mcr-like) enzymes and their substrates which resulted in the first description of a GOM-arc1 euryarchaeota that utilizes ethane (Dombrowski and Seitz et al. 2017) and the discovery of an Mcr in a novel Asgard archaea phylum. For my future research, I will aim at coupling ‘big’ data and computational approaches to investigate environmental disturbances and promote bioremediation efforts. It is my goal to be able to use the knowledge we gain from exploring more of the archaeal domain towards promoting environmental health. I am currently looking for international research positions that will allow me to pursue this type of research.
