Co-Hive is a Sydney-based organisation supporting young adults aged 17-35 as they transition from school to adult life. We empower participants through developing self-determination, exploring career paths, gaining open employment, and pursuing vocational or higher education. Along the way, we help them build lasting connections, confidence, and a sense of belonging within a supportive community.With over 20 years in special education, I’ve seen firsthand how young people leave school without understanding their NDIS goals or participating in IEP meetings, which results in a lack of autonomy over their lives. While the NDIS promotes choice and control, we often find that participants are not experiencing this. At Co-Hive, we are committed to changing this narrative by fostering independence, problem-solving, and goal-setting.Our foundation is deeply rooted in research-based practices, particularly in self-determination theory. Measuring the impact of these approaches is essential for our continued growth and success. In just nine months, Co-Hive has made a remarkable difference to the lives of 48 participants, their families, and the broader community.We are actively seeking to collaborate with researchers and organisations that share our vision of empowering people with disability and advancing evidence-based practices. I believe there is a great opportunity to work together to capture data in real time, co-design with participants, and contribute to meaningful change in the disability landscape.
