Agencies I developed assays for include:NASA: Matured six assays to monitor astronaut health in space for planned use on the Mars Mission, aboard the ISS, and other future long space missions. Enzymatic, antibody-coupled, and chemical approaches were utilized for detection of blood biomarkers, allowing functionality in zero gravity. Integration of an assay enclosure and novel output reader suitable for space travel was part of the intensive troubleshooting process.Department of Defense (DOD): Initiated five assays for rapid field diagnosis of soldiers’ saliva to test level of risk of heart attack using lateral flow methods.USDA: Developed a rapid dipstick assay to detect small molecular weight toxin in cattle feed and milk that can be easily used by personnel, such as farmers, with no training and on site. Lateral flow antibody-coupled techniques were used.NOAA: Developed a rapid field assay to detect a lethal neurotoxin that is released in shoreline water by dinoflagellate cells and is present in shellfish meat during algal blooms.
