I recently volunteered at an international conference. While I didn't attend any sessions, I was around some of the most amazing people I've ever met. I listened to their passion and excitement for their fields. I saw their love of learning and improving. It opened my eyes and my heart to new opportunities (that I'm not quite ready to share, but I'm already working on).My passion and part of my background is in emergency and disaster management. I started my adventures in disaster preparedness and response in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Washoe County, NV back in 2007, while I worked on my first Master's degree in Emergency and Disaster Management. My mentor was amazing and wonderful, but he couldn't get me experience with disasters (that wouldn't be a superpower most people wouldn't want). So, I moved to Texas (lots of disasters there). I started off in Emergency Management in Rockwall County, TX. My mentor there was also amazing and wonderful. He wanted me to grow and build in emergency management. Since my position was limited in scope, he helped me find a position with the American Red Cross where we both felt I could learn more and do more related to disaster preparedness and response. I spent almost 3 years there. I stopped counting the number of responses I participated in at 1,000 (and that was probably close to the 2-year mark). I learned a lot. More than I'll ever be able to share with anyone. One of the lessons learned - "entrepreneurs" and home-based or small business owners are hit with disasters twice. It's a documented issue, but until you stand in front of someone who has literally lost everything - their home, belongings, and livelihood - you cannot grasp the depth of that devastation for that person. It was moments like that I remembered my freshman year in high school when asked what I wanted to do - I replied, "I want to help people." I regularly ask myself the same question asked of me that day - "Kim, HOW do you want to help people?" I now add the question I learned from Brendon Burchard in GrowthDay - "What's the next move of integrity?" I keep those questions in mind as I continue to adapt in my professional life. With plenty of experience in disaster preparedness and response, eCommerce, and marketing, and education in emergency and disaster management, criminal justice, and business - I have a long list of potential ways to help. I volunteer with CERT again, provide videos on YouTube, and test A LOT. I have several projects in the works I hope to share soon.
