Assisting the national trachoma control programs supported by The Carter Center to achieve the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem; currently supporting the ministries of health to implement trachoma programming in Ethiopia and Niger. This support includes providing technical guidance to the Carter Center country teams and ministries of health; developing annual program budgets and tracking expenditures; writing of grant proposals and donor reports; negotiating terms of agreements and reporting requirements; monitoring program activities and outputs; conducting field visits to assess ongoing programming and provide support; contributing to technical publications to share findings of operational research and implementation of activities for program improvement; engaging with local and international partners to coordinate program approaches; and organizing high-level visits for partners and donors to observe project activities.

Managed the development of Android-based application to track trichiasis surgery conducted by national trachoma programs. Evaluated tool on user experience, functionality, practicality and usability. Developed supporting materials, including user manual, training materials, user agreements, and templates. Led training sessions and providing ongoing support to officials from Ministries of Health to field surgeons involved in surgery outreach. Supported countries in configuration of the tool to the local context, including developing automated reports to assist in programmatic decision making.

Gambella, Ethiopia

Managed the program in Abobo Woreda, a remote, Guinea worm-endemic, region of Ethiopia. During the field placement I supervised in-country staff, provided technical guidance for program activities, established work plans, created and maintained program budgets, evaluated program activities, coordinated with programs and government agencies, and developed training materials and workshops for volunteers and program staff.

Managing program operations, which includes, but is not limited to: formulating terms of reference; reviewing and approving staff expense reports; developing standard operating procedures; coordinating all aspects of international-level meetings; conducting internal budget assessments; evaluating contract deliverables; reviewing and submitting invoices for processing; recruiting consultants and interns; copy-editing reports and publications for distribution; formulating trip report templates and guidelines; managing travel for program executives; establishing service contracts related to program operations including with visa processors, hotels, language tutors, and caterers; coordinating with Task Force for Global Health programs to establish best practices for event management; training support staff in logistics activities; creating position descriptions for new positions within the organization; corresponding with country programs and program partners.

When in this position, my responsibilities did include: coordinating annual program review preparations, including the coordination of catering, audio visual, travel, accommodations, and expense reports; serving as liaison for country staff and donors regarding ongoing projects and collaborations; processing travel requests and approvals for consultancy for the Trachoma Control Program; editing health education materials and other documents for publication; monitoring IRB protocols for ongoing studies and submitting amendments as needed.
