About Kimberly A. Godfrey
My career did not pan out as planned, but I am exactly what I always wanted to be. I am a Woman in Natural Sciences, a WINS girl! For 21 years, I worked in Natural Sciences in many forms for reputable organizations. My plan was to study Marine Biology, so I did everything I could related to the field. I worked with marine mammal trainers, aquarium biologists, researched bottlenose dolphins, helped necropsy manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and cleaned and articulated skeletons! The switch to environmental education occurred due to availability. Marine Biology is an extremely competitive field, but the Philadelphia Zoo felt I had a lot to offer their education programs, especially considering one involved caring for and releasing diamond back terrapins. I connected well with students because I truly enjoyed sharing my experience, and it fostered an inspiration in them to explore. In 10 years, I helped teach of visitors, students, and families about nature and conservation. People responded most to the depth of my knowledge, and enjoyed my passion and enthusiasm for my work. I also think they enjoyed that I was sincere. I opened their eyes to the nature in our own back yard, and that connecting with nature was easier than believed.Today, I combine all of my experience to provide opportunities for youth who come from backgrounds where opportunity is hard to come by. I work with young ladies who have either never been exposed to nature, or have had very little exposure to hands-on experiences. As the WINS coordinator I also relate to these ladies on a personal level by being a Philadelphia Native with a challenging up-bringing. I truly value that I can serve as a role model and inspire these young women to take what is often the road less traveled, and I get to use natural science as my tool. I finally feel I'm exactly where I want and need to be!If you want to connect or learn more about the WINS program, please contact me at kag379@drexel.edu.
