A key aspect of my role was developing and scaling enterprise delivery for State and Federal Open Data platforms. As the lead Solutions Architect for Australia and NZ, my AWS Cloud architectures powered data.gov.au, the taxsuperandme.com.au website for ATO, and State data portals for NSW, VIC, WA and SA.I designed and delivered highly available, scaling Cloud solutions hosting valuable websites such as australiansatwarfilmarchive.unsw.edu.au. This hertiage archive contains over 11,000 hours of transcribed video hosted on AWS Cloud services.I worked with ANU genomic reserachers helping them deliver innovative applications on AWS. I worked with the team at NCI, Australia’s super computing facility, to successfully prototype HPC workloads in AWS Cloud. I’ve acquired the nickname “Davobot” because you can turn me to any challenge and I’ll work out a solution for it.

As the company grew, rebranded and matured an enterprise delivery capability, I lead the project management office and lead many of the major projects taking place in the business. Among these was a significant migration of the hosting management platform from Plesk based control panels to Parallels Automation. Another successful implementation I lead was the installation of Microsoft Dynamics CRM.I was fortunate to leave the company just as it was preparing for sale, with significant downsizing and layoffs in the following year, and eventual acquisition by Melbourne IT.

With significant acquisitions becoming an important aspect of the company’s growth strategy, a strong technical lead was required for the internal technical teams. These consisted of Network, Development and Systems Administration. Due to my previous successes in the business, I was offered this new role. Aside from running sizeable migration projects as we acquired smaller hosting companies, the division I headed up was also responsible for data centre deployments of XIV SANs, IBM Blade Centres and top of rack switching. During my leadership in this role, we also migrated 20 racks of legacy servers and equipment into a new data suite.I played a major role in the senior leadership team that saw the company appear in the BRW Top 50 several years in a row.

Shortly after joining AussieHQ I identified a gap in the service offerings based on repeated inquiries from customers wanting web development to be done. Working with others in the business I created the web design division. Within a short period of time, this became a successful business unit, landing the single largest contract the company had to date, helping CASA with an online safety survey of aircraft operators. This also helped the company build credibility with Federal Govt. clients that later lead to an enterprise delivery capability.Using agile, the web development team were also able to rewrite a critical domain management system in 3 months. Prior to our involvement, it had been stalled for 2 years. The system was so well implemented that it was still in service 8 years later.

I joined AussieHQ by calling in a favour with the CEO who gleefully told me, “We haven’t got a specific position for you, but we’d love to have you work for us, so come in and we’ll find something for you to do!”The initial something was enterprise account management, building relationships with key clients and selling additional services to them. Based on my previous experience, this worked out well for everyone, building valuable trust relationships for the business.

I moved to Canberra Sept 1st 2001, just before the world turned upside down. None the less, I was able to land a job at Fairstar Computers within 2 weeks, just by going door to door and handing out my CV. 6 months later I was asked to interview for a GM position at PC Connections, having made such a great impression a few months eariler.This was a small business building and selling PCs during a big downturn in the market. The owner was keen to sell, and needed someone competently running the operation to make this possible. In a challenging environment I ran the day to day business, streamlined operations to cut cost and improve profit. The most significant change I was a part of, was transforming the repair aspect of the business which had been making losses month on month, to contributing a healthy 25% to the bottom line.I built strong relationships with business customers and vendors alike. This kept repeat sales rolling in and ensured timely delivery of urgent orders from suppliers when needed. I ran and streamlined procurement, managed the sales, technical and engineering teams, and performed administration tasks such as daily banking, order management and logistics.

I’m grateful to have been convinced to learn fuel injection systems despite not having the first idea about mechanics or cars. What I did know was system design and diagnostics, so writing EFI diagnostic software in C++ became my life for 8 years.TAL quickly gained a reputation around the country for being able to fix cars nobody else could. The software we developed compared the signals from known good vehicles against those with problems, to pinpoint where faults were. In cases where all the input sensors functioned correctly, and outputs were correct, this pointed at a mechanical failure. One of the best examples of this was Peugeot 506 that had an incorrect camshaft fitted. It spent six months in various workshops having sensors and computers replaced to no avail until it arrived with us. After a morning of test driving we validated the electronics, and established the camshaft had been replaced around the time the problems started.Tasks: Project Management, Technical Presales, Internal I.T.
