Phd Student
PhD project undertaken at the University of York in Prof. Gavin Thomas's lab (website page of the lab found linked below). Worked on engineering E. coli to increase its efficiency in uptaking xylan derived sugars and produce bioethanol. The project is part of a bigger effort which includes another 2 PhD projects, one at the University of Leeds and one at the University of Sheffield. The three projects form the HUB (hemicellulose-utilising bacteria) network. The projects are of great economic and biotechnological importance as the demand for renewable energy is increasing. See attached file below for more information.
College Tutor Position
I have been a college tutor for the Wentworth College at the University of York. The Wentworth college is the only one out of 8 colleges in total which hosts only postgraduate students. The college tutors are senior students who live alongside the undergraduate and postgraduate members of the College. I worked closely(weekly meetings) with the Head of College, Assistant Head of College and College Administrator to create and nurture the college community. I was also actively working with various student and staff to facilitate and deliver events, activities and workshops. Examples of events I helped organise include college cinema nights, themed club nights, excursions within York, festive (halloween, christmas) celebrations. Actively contributed to the Wentworth seminar series which happened every fortnight and involved presentation from academics. The college tutor team also provided a visible and active presence within the blocks and acted to provide initial welfare support to students encountering difficulties. The purpose of the role was not to provide ongoing and professional welfare support, but rather to signal to students where such support is to be found within the University, recognising the limitations of their own input. The position required inputing an average of 15 hours per week over the course of my third PhD academic year, excluding the overnight on call duties which happened once a week during each month.
Industrial Placement (Pip)
Undertook this placement under the Professional Placements for PhD students (PIPs) scheme of the BBSRC. The BDC is a non-for- profit company based at the Science Park of the University of York and Dunnighton village. BDC helps businesses develop ways to convert plants, microbes and biowastes into profitable biorenewable products. I mainly worked at the Processing Development Unit of the company, where the pretreatment of the Miscanthus biomass happened. The aim of the placement was to pretreat the Miscanthus feedstock with different media inc. water, sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide. The pretreatment happened in the fibre expansion vessel under high temperature and pressure. Further, fractions of the pretreated solid and liquid biomass were analysed using SEM and HPLC (following saccharification). After the placement came to an end, the data obtained were recorded in the format of a scientific report.
Summer Research Placement (Sure Scheme) - University Of Sheffield
I was awarded a place in SURE scheme following an interview process. I was based at Dr. Jonathan Shaw’s lab at the Department of Infection and Immunity of the Medical School. The placement involved laboratory work and two formal presentations (one at the start and one at the end of the project). The project involved gene transfer of the bacteria by mutagenesis and then analysis for any phenotypic changes or complete abolishment of swarming.
Summer Research Placement - University Of Sheffield
I was awarded a Genetics Society Undergraduate Research studentship to undertake a placement at a Genetics lab led by Dr. Alastair Goldman in the Department of MBB. The project involved a comparative study of various mre11 mutations on rate of DNA resection. The results were published on Issue 66 of Genetics society Newsletter (pp.45-46).
