Assistant Professor In Mechanical And Aerospace Engineering
CurrentResearch in computational methods for design, uncertainty quantification, optimization and control of large-scale and complex systems. The primary emphasis is on developing reduced-order and multi-fidelity methods for computational engineering of increasingly complex, and large-scale systems. Teaching courses in mechanical and aerospace engineering at the graduate and undergraduate level, specifically computational methods in engineering.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
In the research group of Professor Karen Willcox, and the Aerospace Computational Design Laboratory, I worked on: Uncertainty quantification for complex systems (including robust design and rare event estimation); Learning physics-based reduced-order surrogate models from data; Multi-fidelity methods in optimization, design and control.
Graduate Assistant
My Ph.D. research developed reduced-order surrogate modeling methods for simulation and control of large-scale dynamical systems. I have developed both data-driven (system identification from simulated or experimental data) and intrusive (projection-based model reduction) methods to approximate expensive high-fidelity models with efficient and accurate reduced-order models (ROMs). I utilized these ROMs in optimal control, and developed an algorithm to solve large-scale matrix equations. As a graduate teaching assistant, I was the primary instructor for "Introduction to Differential Equations", and "Calculus I". I also assisted recitation sessions in "Vector Geometry" and tutored at the "Math Emporium" online learning facility of the mathematics department.
Research Intern In Mechatronics And Multimedia
Developed a real-time classification and reconstruction method for partially sensed, parametric dynamical systems. The approach combined reduced-order modeling (DMD, POD) for complex industrial systems with compressed sensing to arrive at a sensing algorithm for indoor-air environments. This algorithm is a first step for model-based control of AC systems, and led to two patents with Mitsubishi Electric for the operation of complex air-conditioning systems (US Patent 10,145,576 and US Patent 9,976,765).
Co-Owner And Co-Founder
As a co-owner of this company, I was involved in: Acquiring new customers (corporate/private); research and purchasing of new printing solutions; tax filing; supplier negotiation and contacts.
Intern Risk Controlling
In the risk-controlling unit, I modeled and analyzed insurance risks in the context of the new European Solvency II regulations with internal Asset Liability Interaction Models (ALM). As a key part of simulating Allianz's risk when facing different market/non-market events, I modeled liability cash flows with financial market instruments to replicate life insurance portfolios. I also implemented a search and structuring algorithm to analyze the complex investment structure of Allianz.
Research Assistant
At the Institute for Engineering Mechanics (ITM), I helped as an undergraduate student worker to research literature and models for correlation effects of grain orientation of crystals, and worked on improving some Matlab-based programs.
