Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset

Part of a team of 6 including 3 Beach Wardens and 3 Beach Lifegaurds patrolling the beaches of Sedgemoor in Somerset at Burnham-on-Sea on the estuary of the River Parrett where it flows into the Bristol Channel and at Berrow Beach further up the coast.The beaches have the second highest tidal range in the world leading to dangerous rip currents and treacherous mudflats. I started work a couple years after the death of 5-year old Lelaina (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1398320/Rescuers-tell-of-desperate-fight-to-save-mud-flats-girl.html) for which the BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat) was founded (since upgraded to the RNLI) and for which our job was created.Individually, and as part of a team, we prevented numerous incidents through the use of life saving skills and preventative measures.At both beaches we worked closely with the the Police Force, Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard, BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat) and the RNLI.

Full-Time during Holidays.Too many incidents to mention including incredibly stupid people diving into shallow ends of the pool and cracking skulls to epileptic fits in the pool to spinals in the flumes/slides and river rapids. No one drowned or was permantently injured on any of our watches.
