United States

The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowship on Environmental Issues and Natural Resource Management helps the fellow to explore the role that environmental policy has played in the economic and political development of the United States. The fellowship will use experiential learning techniques to expose participants to current themes in the field, including natural resource management, sustainable development/sustainable agricultural practices, food security, ecotourism, energy generation (new and traditional forms), and water management and treatment. The issues were explored from numerous angles: local grassroots activism and civic initiatives, market-oriented approaches, and federal government policies and regulation. The fellowships explored environmental issues in the context of a globalized society, and draw comparisons between the United States and the participants’ home countries. All 21 selected fellows from ASEAN and Timor Leste had the opportunity to leave the classroom to meet with community leaders, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The host institution for my fellowship is the Institutes for Natural Resource Managers, East-West Center at Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Rimba Project focuses on campus greening and urban biodiversity conservation. We work closely with the Sustainability Secreteriat and Development Office of the University of Malaya to advise on the environmental and greening policy. Besides, we also conduct outreach programmes involving biodiversity mapping, guided walks and citizen science activities.

The internship placement is under the Herbarium of Singapore Botanic Garden. Main work involves assisting in studying endemic plants distribution in Borneo through geo-referencing on QGIS.
