About Kristen Check

Kristen has over 10 years of experience in the international development non-profit sector including designing and supporting monitoring & evaluation for multi-million-dollar development projects funded by World Bank, UNICEF, Pentair Foundation, among others. Her sector experience is vast, having worked with organizations providing safe water in Honduras, educating children and youth in Tanzania, rescuing victims of human trafficking in India, and sharing the gospel in South Sudan. Her technical work has also been broad, and includes executing training programs, hosting webinars and podcasts, facilitating community networks, and advising numerous international non-profit organizations on their monitoring & evaluation strategies in order to help them ‘measure what matters’ - to fulfill their mission and vision.Kristen holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Cultural Anthropology, and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from the London School of Tropical Medicine.Kristen resides on the Caribbean island of St. Croix, USVI with her husband and two sons. She enjoys any activity in and on the water (but especially under the water in the coral reefs).

    June 2014•Conducted preliminary research within four communities along Lake Victoria on the health impact and community perceptions of two different models of community-based water filtration systems.•The study offered an improved understanding of the impact of household distance and other barriers (perceived or real) to accessing safe water in rural areas, community perceptions of water system ownership and waterborne disease, and how those perceptions influence actual water use and disease load within a community.•Managed a team which collected 37 ethnographic interviews and household surveys•Performed qualitative data analysis with Atlas.ti 7.1.8 and quantitative analysis with IBM SPSS Statistics 22•Provided community assessments to in-country and international staff•Findings contributed to the reformulation of success standards for safe water projectsJuly-August 2011 & July-August 2010•Managed and led ethnographic research portion of the $8 million Water for Africa project •Assisted in designing of ethnographic research methodology with Director of Health Studies •Oversaw and guided student research team and local interpreters •Observed and managed focus group discussions with moderator•Collaborated with other team leaders on biomarker study of three water-borne illnesses to set a baseline prevalence for disease load in the 6 study communities along Lake Victoria•Organized data which consisted of 140 interviews and 16 focus groups (nearly 80 taped hours) in Excel spreadsheets •Analyzed over 700,000 transcribed words and 600 primary documents in Atlas.ti •Assisted in final report write-up for internal circulation, an article for journal publication, and grant applications for external funding to pursue the project into the second phase
