I love to learn. In fact, I feel it's important to constantly be learning. With my passion for learning, I quickly realized I wanted to help others who were on their own journeys to gain new skills and knowledge. My first role in adult education was as a facilitator. I trained new associates to the company, helping them acclimate to their roles and the company. Although I enjoyed facilitating, my passion was creating the materials we were using in these classes. That's where my love for instructional design really started! It combined much of what I love: problem-solving, writing and using fancy tools. Some of those tools I got to use were already known by me: Word, PowerPoint and Publisher. I also got the opportunity to learn how to use some new programs, including Articulate, Camtasia, Inkling, Photoshop and Premiere Pro. With those tools, I was able to create a wide variety of end products, including job aids, videos, instructor-led trainings and eLearning. In my last role, there was not an existing Instructional Design team. The responsibilities were previously divided up between several groups. With a new team, I worked to create a framework for how the team took on these projects, to how we accepted instructional design requests to how we met with our business partners. Using ADDIE as our framework, we were able to create and manage a process that could be followed by anyone on our team (and even outside of it). When not writing or designing, I get a lot of inspiration from my volunteer work with Special Olympics. I am the guardian for my brother and he motivated me to get involved with them even more! For a little under a decade, I have been a member of the Games Management Team for our local region. To see how hard these athletes work to master their sport is truly inspiring!
