I served as the student coordinator of the 5-member team of chapel assistants during my junior year of college, 2017-2018.As a chapel assistant at the University of Puget Sound, I serve as a university representative to the many on-campus and off-campus guests that make use of chapel spaces for weddings, memorials, meetings, concerts, lectures, and other events. This job requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, forethought, and customer service; beyond the technical aspects of the work, however, I am a calm and friendly presence for chapel users during difficult, stressful, or joyful times in their lives such as weddings and memorials. Being the audio and video technician as well as the building manager for these events has taught me to think on my feet, solve problems before they arise, and be attentive to many people's needs at once. Kilworth Memorial Chapel Event Management and Office Assistance:Book reservations and work with other student staff to maintain the chapel calendar, avoid double-bookings, and resolve scheduling conflicts when necessary.Attend weddings/unions, memorials, and campus events to manage the building, run sound system, unlock doors, setup and breakdown events, and serve as a representative of the Chaplain’s office.Provide tours to prospective Chapel guests.Create posters, banners, and other informational pieces related to Kilworth Memorial Chapel and department events. Provide guest service, manage Kilworth Memorial Chapel email, help with other office tasks.File management of wedding, union, and memorial files. Senior Interfaith Coordinator
Interfaith Coordinators are current University of Puget Sound students who receive a mentorship supporting their ongoing development for leadership in faith-specific, multifaith, and/or interfaith programs, being mentored by University Chaplain Dave Wright throughout the program. In my first year in the program, I focused on basic theory and practice of pluralistic religious/spiritual life work, particularly within the context of the campus's multidisciplinary Center for Intercultural and Civic Engagement. I helped put together educational programs for the campus community to learn about the intersections of religion and other areas of life. As a returning Interfaith Coordinator, I focused on developing programs and worship opportunities for the Christian communities on campus, while supporting my fellow Interfaith Coordinators as they worked on bigger campus events. As a Senior Interfaith Coordinator, I am focusing more on institutional leadership, observing the work of significant campus committees and helping design and execute major events.
Pastoral Intern
As the summer pastoral intern at Epworth UMC, I worked closely with Pastor Kristin Stoneking on a variety of projects and events. During the course of the summer, I preached and served as the liturgist during worship, writing my own texts to inspire the congregation. One of my main responsibilities was helping plan and facilitate a weeklong Peace Arts Camp for middle schoolers. As part of this, I coordinated a walking tour of Berkeley street art where campers discussed the meaning and significance of the many murals across north and central Berkeley. Furthermore, I started a young adult small group, planning two events for this underserved population within the church and bringing in some people who hadn't found a place in the church. I also created a streamlined contact database to pass along to the next leader of the group. Finally, I established a system for recording worship services, editing the audio, and publishing them as podcasts.Overall, my work was to support the pastor in her work, to participate and learn from the wide variety of events happening at the church, and to brainstorm and implement improvements to church systems.
Interim Youth Director
For four months, I served as the interim Youth Director at 300-member Epworth United Methodist Church in Berkeley, CA. In this role, I was responsible for planning and leading weekly youth group meetings as well as semimonthly special group events or outings. Beyond the youth group facilitation and ministry, I brainstormed and implemented changes to streamline communications and other practices for the incoming youth director. Finally, I supported the youth as they led worship by preaching, reading, and providing music for several services.
Worship Design Intern
I took a leave of absence during the spring semester of my junior year of college in order to pursue internships in churches at home and abroad. This worship-focused pastoral internship at my home church included:- working on weekly worship scripts including choosing hymns and other worship elements- preaching at the church's contemporary worship service- writing prayers and leading the congregation in them- assisting with Ashoka Changemaker Initiative launch and rollout- attending weekly worship meetings- attending worship design retreats to plan future sermon series - helping plan and lead Conversational Church, a weekly post-worship conversation space for congregants to discuss current issues and difficult questions- serving in the music ministry and helping lead worship with the band and choir- meeting with staff and lay members in order to hear their stories and discern my own call
Pastoral Intern
I took the spring semester of my junior year of college off in order to intern abroad and at home. During this two-month internship at a 9000-member church community in rural northern Germany, I expanded my horizons and learned a lot about ministry outside of the United States. I also took on responsibilities and leadership roles that I had not held before.I began the internship chaperoning and helping lead three middle-school confirmation retreats, introducing youth to the idea of being part of a church community and of having a personal faith. I also taught weekly confirmation classes to these same middle schoolers most weeks during my internship. I told Bible stories, led discussions, and encouraged the youth to think critically about the material being presented to them. While I am fluent in German, I was at first not well-educated about church terminology in German, so it was a bit of a learning curve to be able to teach middle schoolers and be able to convey everything I wanted to say.I attended many funerals and memorials during my internship and I was also allowed to sit in on a few conversations with grieving family members. These experiences were difficult but heartwarming, as I saw the comfort the church can bring to those in need.Throughout my internship, I helped with worship leadership when possible and sang in the church's choir. I also attended regular regional pastor's conferences where I learned about the current state of the church in northern Germany and about the modernization and relevancy problems they face. Finally, I participated in and attended a variety of other church events and town celebrations, and I relished the opportunity to expand my horizons and learn about the church in a different part of the world.

The summer after my sophomore year of college, I served as the Project TIM intern at a relatively new church-start, EMBRACE, in Alameda, CA.
