Biodiversity Technical Officer
Incident Support Officer
Part time assignment in the National Incident Room working on EU Exit No Deal incident. This role involved cross-business contingency planning, I worked flexibly across a number of roles including incident and reporting, planning and logistics.
Ecologist
My role within the south-west ecology team involves collaboration on a number of ecological projects, from small-scale building renovations, to renewable energy development and transport schemes. I am most interested in bat ecology and have five years experience conducting a number of different bat surveys including emergence, tree inspections, building (internal and external) inspections and activity surveys. I am largely responsible for the collection, storage and analysis of bat data. I have trained other individuals to use bat analysis software such as AnalookW.I have experience in a number of protected species surveys including dormouse, reptile, otter, water vole, great crested newt, badger and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals. I also have experience carrying out site supervision work, particularly in relation to badgers.I am a competent user of GIS and have carried out field surveys on portable handheld devices such as Trimbles and iPads. I have assisted with production of a broad range of technical reports for protected species in relation to proposed developments, species baseline chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments and BREEAM assessments.
Sabbatical
Research Assistant (Monbukagakusho Government Scholarship)
I worked as a Research Assistant in receipt of a competitive Japanese government scholarship carrying out research on bat ecology and providing support to Professor David A. Hill of Kyoto University, Primate Research Institute. I was involved in two conservation and research projects: Ecology of the Ussuri tube-nose bat (Murina ussuriensis):A research project focusing on the ecology of the elusive forest species Murina ussuriensis.I assisted with surveys within the Yakushima UNESCO World Heritage forest study site. Surveys involved taking biometric data, DNA and faecal samples. Field work has also involved radio tracking to find their roosting locations. I performed sonogram and statistical data analysis on data collected from previous field seasons across various sites in Japan, extracting call parameters from social calls in order to build a structured library of call types. I also conducted a literature review to determine the extent of previous research efforts into this niche area of social call ecology.Yakushima island conservation grant project:The first locally-funded project on Yakushima island on bat ecology. The focus of this project was to determine bat activity in human-influenced habitats across the island, outside of the designated UNESCO World Heritage forest.I led the field transect surveys, assisted by volunteers and used capturing methods to collect data on species presence and composition.I conducted the data analysis, creating graphs and maps. Part of the dissemination of this project will involve creating articles with the aim to publish in local conservation journals to raise local awareness of bats.
